The History of Eureka High School

Eureka High School has served the community as an organized school for more than one hundred years. Records show that Eureka High School was organized in 1908, and was housed in the Opera House over the old drug store. In 1909, a four-room high school building was built and two years of high school offered. In 1912, the first class of seven members was graduated, having completed four years of high school work. The school became a first-class high school in 1916 with about forty students and three teachers. A new high school building was built in 1934, with the east wing being added in 1943. In 1951 the shop building was completed and in 1954 the west wing and music buildings were built. The gymnasium-cafeteria building was completed in 1960.

In 1949, the Rockwood School District was organized from twenty-one small districts. Since that date, the Rockwood School District and Eureka High School have grown tremendously in number of students, facilities, and educational programs.

During the 1973-74 school year, the high school moved from 500 North Central in Eureka to the new campus located in the valley on Highway 109. The campus is situated on approximately 80 acres and boasts a spectacular view and a modern, comfortable setting. Among the additions to the campus in recent years are a new fitness area, three new science labs, three science classrooms as well as renovation of six other classrooms, a new darkroom for the photography program, renovation and expansion of the kitchen and cafeteria/commons area, a new instructional wing with 12 classrooms, a new gymnasium and a state-of-the-art 500-seat theatre.

Eureka High School has a proud tradition of accomplishments and continues to educate a community of young men and women who make a lifelong contribution to our city, state and country. That tradition lives on today. Eureka has been named a Missouri Gold Star School by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and a Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department Education, one of the highest recognitions any high school may receive. Additionally, Eureka High School has been consistently recognized by Newsweek Magazine as one of the most challenging high schools in America.
