Efforts to improve school safety, climate and learning are not separate endeavors. It requires a comprehensive school community approach with personnel from many areas. Effective school safety efforts:

• Provide a team-based framework to facilitate effective coordination of services and interventions. 

• Balance the needs for physical and psychological safety. Employ the necessary and appropriately trained mental health and safety personnel.

• Engage families and community providers as meaningful partners.

Rockwood has a team of employees and safety personnel who conduct walk-throughs of all RSD schools. Once a semester, this group “surprises” schools with a checklist of safety requirements to ensure compliance. The team members include administrators, facilities representatives, school resource officers, emergency management officials, support staff and parents.
