Superintendent Comments
In his Superintendent Comments at the April 24, 2025, Board of Education meeting, Dr. Curtis Cain shared the following updates:
-
Phones are ringing across the Rockwood School District. Our annual Community Survey just came to a close this week, we have a Comprehensive School Improvement Plan Survey that opened today and will close right around May 5, we have an Employee Experience Survey that will begin on May 5, and we have another important survey item I would like to speak to. This community survey speaks to the potential for a ballot item and will solicit feedback from district households to provide insight into what our residents think about the district and potential financing for staff salaries and benefits as well as additional safety personnel. Participants will be selected totally at random, and all responses will be kept completely confidential. For those who are not contacted at random on the phone, online versions are available for anyone who would like to participate. The online survey will close on Monday, May 5. We are asking for our community to answer the call – or take the time to fill out the online survey – and make your voices heard.

The Rockwood School District Strategic Plan Steering Committee held its sixth meeting at the Administrative Annex earlier this month, as part of the yearlong process to help prepare for a new district strategic plan for 2025-2030. At this point in the strategic planning process, a draft plan and Rockwood Promise are being developed and shared with Rockwood patrons for feedback. Please visit rsdmo.org/Promise for more information.

Margaret Sullivan, Rockwood Summit High librarian and lead librarian for the Rockwood School District, is the Missouri Association of School Librarians' (MASL) School Librarian of the Year for 2024-2025. Margaret was one of 11 librarians from around the state under consideration for the MASL award after earning regional honors in January.

Staying on that theme, Rockwood held its seventh annual Battle of the Books event April 10, with 152 students from all 19 Rockwood elementary schools participating. Each school was represented by eight fourth- and fifth-grade students. The trivia-style contest pairs teams of students up against each other to test their knowledge about books designated as Mark Twain Award nominees. The team from Ellisville Elementary accumulated the most points and was declared the winner. April is School Library Month, and we would like to take this time to thank all of our Rockwood librarians for the essential role they play in transforming student learning.

The work of Lafayette junior Luke Hinton has been featured -- and won awards -- in multiple state, regional and national art shows this year. Most recently, Luke had two pieces featured in the National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition in Salt Lake City, Utah, and earned five awards, including the Kansas City Art Institute Presidential Scholarship. In this video, Hinton gives us an inside look at his craft and inspirations. Let’s watch.
