Ramp Up to Algebra

This online summer course provides an acceleration option for Math 7 students and review of essential content for Math 8 students in preparation for Algebra 1. Upon successful completion of this online summer course, Math 7 students will be enrolled in Algebra 1 for the upcoming school year. Please see the Math Pathways to review the various options available to Rockwood students.

This online course is for students currently enrolled in Math 7 or Math 8. It is recommended that Math 7 students have grades of As in their previous math courses, score in the 90th percentile or higher on the STAR assessment, like the challenge of mathematics, and have an interest in a STEM-related field. This course is also for Math 8 students who wish to keep their math skills sharp over the summer in preparation for Algebra 1.

Ramp Up to Algebra is offered in an online learning format. It is available during Summer Academy, which is from June 2 – June 27 in 2025.

Throughout the four weeks, students work at their own pace at anytime of the day and anywhere they have internet access. Thus, students can complete coursework as it fits into their summer schedule. They should expect to spend approximately 60 hours during the four-week timeframe to complete the course.

Ramp Up to Algebra is designed to provide a foundation for the development of skills necessary for success in Algebra I. Instructional time will focus on four critical areas:

1. formulating and reasoning about equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations
2. grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships
3. analyzing two-dimensional figures using angles, similarity, and congruence
4. developing an understanding of exponential properties to simplify numerical expressions

Ramp Up to Algebra will utilize Canvas, our district learning management system. The online class will be similar to classroom instruction. Students will:

• View instructional videos
• Complete assignments and upload work to the system
• Take online assessments
• Communicate directly with the teacher if they have questions
• Receive timely feedback on progress

Students will need to connect to the internet, as well as a computer or a Rockwood-issued Chromebook. District-provided internet access is available if needed.
