At Crestview Middle
, Christy Schumacher, John Jones and Kevin Bowman are longtime custodians.
“I enjoy being around people, especially the kids,” said Schumacher, who has been with Rockwood for nearly seven years. “You become friends with your colleagues. It’s kind of like family here.”
Jones has worked at Eureka High
, Geggie Elementary
and the Administrative Annex and has been employed as a custodian in Rockwood for nearly 15 years. He said the training he received prepared him to operate equipment necessary to do his job.
“They will run you through a training program before you’re sent to a school,” said Jones. “I work five days a week and get my weekends off. There are a lot of benefits working in Rockwood.”
Facilities Director Chris Freund said being a custodian at Rockwood is a full-time job that comes with health insurance benefits, vacation, sick time, a retirement plan and 11 paid holidays a year. There are two shifts available – days and evenings.
Bowman, a Rockwood alum, has been employed at his middle school alma mater for 12 years. He said there is a camaraderie in the district, which is celebrating National Custodial Staff Appreciation Day on Oct. 2.
“You always feel like you’re part of a team when you’re working in Rockwood,” said Bowman. “The administrators are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. They’re always friendly, and they have a good sense of humor."
“I appreciate that Rockwood School District has hired me to do the job I’m doing,” added Jones.
