student Alice Liu has received top honors by winning first place at the state level and second place nationally in the InvestWrite essay contest. Liu was surprised by her principal, Dr. Gary Jansen, and her teacher, Tara Matthews, at her home Wednesday morning.
The InvestWrite essay contest serves as a culminating activity for students who play the Stock Market Game. The game, a program of the SIFMA (Securities Industry and Financial Market Association) Foundation, is an online simulation of the global capital markets.
“Throughout the semester, students invest in a company,” explained Matthews. “They then follow that company throughout the semester and gain a fundamental understanding of investing."
Matthews, the eighth-grade Academic Stretch teacher at Crestview, is extremely proud of her student.
“Each year, we play the Stock Market Game in my class,” said Matthews. “At the end of the semester, the students write an essay as part of their final exam. They are encouraged to enter their essays in the contest.”
The essays are usually submitted sometime after spring break. However, due to schools shutting down during the pandemic, Matthews decided to make the essay optional. She was thrilled Liu decided to enter.
Liu is equally grateful to her teacher for all her support.
“I could not have done this without Mrs. Matthews,” said Liu, who will be a freshman at Marquette High
As part of her prize package, Liu received a medal and a laptop. Matthews received a banner for her classroom and gift cards to be used for her class.
