Revised 2020-2021 Rockwood School Calendar Update: Responding to Community Feedback

As of Sept. 5, Rockwood School District has received great feedback and questions regarding the drafts of the 2020-2021 school calendar. We value community feedback and consider all input.

We want to address a few common suggestions, including school day hours, final exams and snow days.

The suggestion has been made to add minutes to the school day and have fewer days in session to get out earlier in May. Rockwood has always exceeded the minimum 1,044 instructional hours required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). We believe going above the minimum hours gives our students an academic and social advantage. Currently, our elementary students attend 1,137 hours. Middle school students attend 1,129 hours, and high school students attend 1,092 hours. These instructional hours allow us to deliver curriculum and support student learning.

It is important instructionally to have similar numbers of days in semester courses. Final exams administered in December would create uneven semesters for students. It would also present a challenge for our teachers in semester and quarter classes. These classes would not have the same instructional time to cover content for the course. With the current change in state law, school cannot start until Aug. 24 in the 2020-2021 year. This is two weeks later than a typical start date in Rockwood. With the school year beginning later in the month, final exams will also need to be pushed back. Rockwood administrators are aware of the challenges that January finals may cause for students. We are considering other creative options for this assessment period.

Regarding snow days, Rockwood does not build in snow days. The district exceeds the required minimum instructional 1,044 hours from DESE. Therefore, it is unnecessary to make up instructional hours for inclement weather above 1,044 hours. Rockwood has always gone well over the required minimum hours. By reducing the hours, we would reduce instructional time for students.

If you have not had the opportunity to submit feedback, you may do so until Thursday, Sept. 12. Please complete a short questionnaire by visiting the following link:.
