For the past two weeks, Rockwood Child Nutrition Services
staff members have been preparing around 600 meals a day for distribution to students who normally depend upon meals at school.
They send 300 meals a day on Voluntary Interdistrict Choice Corporation (VICC) buses to be delivered to Rockwood families in St. Louis city and make around 300 meals available for "grab and go" in-person distribution at three sites – LaSalle Springs
, Rockwood South
middle schools – each weekday from 8-10 a.m. LaSalle Springs also sends meals to the Chesterfield Mobile Home Park.
Rockwood Director of Child Nutrition Services Carmen Fischer said the number of families coming to the three distribution sites increases by the day. Thanks to a waiver, students no longer have to be present in order for families to pick up their meals.
"The families, you can tell, are super appreciative," Fischer said. "They're thankful to get the meals."
The plan is to continue in-person distribution at the three sites Mondays through Fridays from 8-10 a.m.
The sites will be closed next Friday, April 10, due to a spring holiday. Families may pick up two meals, for Thursday and Friday, at the sites next Thursday.
"We've got a dedicated bunch of staff members who are happy to prepare meals for our students, especially in this unique situation," Fischer said.
Rockwood has also partnered with St. Louis Public Schools on a network of regional food distribution sites. Families who may not have access to the designated food sites should contact the Rockwood Student Services Department at 636-733-2189 or email Executive Director of Student Services Dr. Terry Harris at firstname.lastname@example.org.
