Kristen Forth is recording video reading lessons for children all over St. Louis.
Forth, the Rockwood School District English language arts instructional coach for kindergarten through second grade, is one of 12 area teachers creating educational video segments for a Nine Network of Public Media program called "Teaching in Room 9."
Starting Monday, May 4, the half-hour segments will be shown from 12:30-2:30 p.m. each week, Monday through Thursday. They are broken up into four categories: reading and math for pre-kindergarten through first grade and second through fourth grade.
Forth is teaching pre-kindergarten through first grade reading.
"It serves children in the community who don't have internet access or reliable devices," Forth said. "Everybody can get Channel 9 on the television. It's to support those children who may not be able to engage with online learning."
The programming will run through August. Forth will create 20 separate half-hour lessons, the first four of which will air the week of May 4.
All the educators involved in "Teaching in Room 9" make lesson plans that match up with standards set by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
"I do wordplay games, writing, building words together with letter cards, and then I read a book and do some activities with the book," Forth said. "It's exciting, and it's a privilege to be a part of this. I love knowing that we're reaching learners and students who maybe don't otherwise have access to getting the education that they deserve."
