Rockwood administrators have decided to reopen school district athletic tracks, which were closed March 27 to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
Rockwood Chief Financial Officer Paul Northington said administrators temporarily limited access to the tracks out of concern for public safety. Too many people were gathering in groups on the tracks during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We realize a lot of people utilize those tracks for exercise," said Northington. "If they can maintain social distancing and avoid gathering in groups, we can keep them open."
This only applies to athletic tracks, not other outdoor district facilities such as football fields, tennis courts and playgrounds.
"We need to observe our surroundings," said Rockwood Superintendent Dr. Mark Miles. "Athletic fields are no different just because they are outdoors. If people can practice social distancing and limit close contact, we can leave the tracks open."
