Eureka High Student's Art Featured on Rockwood Holiday Greeting Card

This year’s Rockwood School District Holiday eCard features the artwork of Eureka High junior Olivia Royal!

Talented student artists from around Rockwood submitted entries into this year’s contest, with Superintendent Dr. Curtis Cain ultimately choosing the winning design.

Dr. Cain, Coordinator of Fine Arts Dr. Megan Meier, Eureka High principal Dr. Corey Sink and assistant principal Dr. David Arledge and Royal's art teacher, Diane Bashirian, were among those on hand to help surprise the student and celebrate her accomplishments Dec. 16.

"It's exciting. I wasn't expecting it," Royal said. "I was trying to think of something that was open to all holidays, and I thought houses and winter goes with that. And snow. We all like snow days."

Cain chose Royal's design from more than 170 submissions, which included hand-painted watercolor and acrylic pieces, drawings, designs from graphic art classes and other mediums.

Bashirian said Royal worked on different versions of the card before submitting her favorite for the contest. Bashirian currently teaches Royal in Art and Design Applications and previously had her in Graphic Design 1.

"She was always doing real-world projects. She redesigned the logo of the ice cream shop where she works," Bashirian said. "I personally invited her to be in the Art and Design class knowing she is really responsible, motivated and super creative and artistic. It's been a blessing to get to be her teacher again. I feel really proud."

Rockwood's 2024 holiday card reads "Warm Wishes and Happy Holidays; Dr. Curtis Cain, Superintendent of Schools; Artwork by Olivia Royal, Eureka High School"

Royal's design piece features snow falling on a cozy holiday scene, complete with pine trees, red buildings with snow-capped roofs, red flatbed trucks and snowmen. The design reads "Warm Wishes and Happy Holidays."

"I like creating something from an idea and translating words into an image," she said.

Thank you to all of the Rockwood students who submitted their artwork for this year’s holiday card contest!
