Fairway Elementary Physical Education Teacher Receives Wellness Grant from American Heart Association

To help address growing needs, the American Heart Association (AHA) recently awarded a $1,900 grant to teacher Ed Gonzalez and Fairway Elementary through its Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge programs.

“We are thankful for the continued support from the American Heart Association,” shared Gonzalez. “Winning this grant from the American Heart Association means that our physical education team will have the equipment to introduce and teach the game of pickleball to our students so they can develop their social, physical and decision-making skills that will be important for their growth now and in the future. This grant will also make it possible to bring team-building and social activities to our entire school staff and Fairway community through the game of pickleball.”

Fairway received the award as part of the latest round of funding from the Kids Heart Challenge grant program, which supports projects that help increase physical activity, improve mental well-being or provide tools for emergency preparedness.

“Every child should have the opportunity to grow up strong, healthy and ready to thrive,” said Cheryl Schnettgoecke, school engagement director of the AHA, a global force changing the future of health of all. “These grants help make that vision a reality by supporting school initiatives that teach healthy habits early and empower students with lifesaving skills. By instilling a culture of health in youth today, we’re building a healthier future for everyone.”

Gonzalez applied for the grant to help provide healthy snacks after school for fourth- and fifth-graders before starting the pickleball lessons, drills and games. The Healthy Snack and Pickleball Club will meet once per week for six-week sessions in the fall, winter and spring. They will purchase two portable pickleball nets, 20 junior pickleball paddles, 36 pickleballs and 100 healthy snacks with the funds they were granted.

“I am exceptionally proud of Mr. Gonzalez for his ongoing commitment and dedication to the health and overall well-being of our Fairway Eagles,” said Fairway Principal Dr. Lorinda Krey. “To have the insight and drive for bringing such a popular and fun lifetime sport into our school community, speaks volumes of Mr. Gonzalez's character. Our students and staff are beyond excited to learn and practice pickleball; and now they have the opportunity to - thanks to Mr. Gonzalez and the American Heart Association!”
