RNEA, Board of Education and District Leadership Engage in Restorative Conversation Following Negotiations

In a significant step toward unity and collaboration, the Rockwood Board of Education, members of the superintendent’s cabinet, leadership from the Rockwood National Education Association (RNEA) and members of the respective negotiations teams came together May 7 for a restorative conversation. This dedicated time together followed seven months of negotiations that culminated in an agreement that was ratified by RNEA members in March.

The conversation was facilitated by Dr. Cassandra Suggs, director of educational equity and access. Recognizing the importance of moving forward together with a shared focus on students, the group engaged in a series of team-building exercises and personal interviews. These activities were intentionally designed to foster understanding, rebuild trust and create space for open and honest dialogue about the negotiation process. Participants shared their feelings, perspectives and experiences, creating an environment conducive to healing and establishing a fresh start as the school year draws to a close.

“I appreciate that the school board and district administration joined us for an honest conversation that included open dialogue and reflection to improve future negotiations processes,” said Thomas Cook, RNEA president. “This was an important first step in strengthening our collaborative relationship to make Rockwood the best learning environment and the best workplace environment.”

Rockwood leadership - including Superintendent Dr. Curtis Cain - Board members and educators particiapate in an activity during a restorative conversation.

The mutually agreed-upon initiative underscores a collective commitment to prioritizing the well-being and educational success of all Rockwood students, as well as fostering an inclusive environment for all staff. By engaging in this restorative practice, the participants demonstrated their dedication to fostering a positive and collaborative working relationship moving forward.

“This restorative conversation marks a pivotal moment, signaling a renewed commitment to working together effectively for the sake of our students and community,” said Superintendent Dr. Curtis Cain, who acknowledged the negotiation process had highs and lows, both public and private. “What I’m most excited about is that we continue to move forward as a school district. Even when there are spaces of disagreement, we learn how to do so in a manner that is befitting and reflective of what it means to be professionals within our school district. We must keep the needs of our students and the well-being of our staff at the forefront of everything we do. As long as we hold onto those two truths, I believe there is nothing that the Rockwood School District cannot do.”
