Rockwood Celebrates Black History Month
February is Black History Month, and schools across the Rockwood School District are celebrating influential African American leaders in a variety of ways.
See some of the ways our schools are honoring Black History Month in the sections below.
Selvidge Middle students are presenting about an influential figure or event each school day during the morning announcements. Eighth-grader Mya was the first to volunteer, and she started off the month by presenting about Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Feb. 3.
On Monday, Feb. 10, Lafayette High welcomed in performers from The St. Louis Black Repertory Company, who performed their play, "The Secret Gallery: African Art Adventures," for students and staff members.
At Pond Elementary, kindergarteners participated in an art project inspired by Alma Thomas, the first African American woman to have her art displayed in a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City and the first graduate of Howard University's art department.
Rockwood South art teachers Alex Baker and Ashley Harper -- in collaboration with assistant principal Dr. Jameelah Spann -- created a mural on the chalkboard near the school entrance, honoring the "Divine Nine" historically African American sororities and fraternities.
LaSalle Springs Middle held its annual interactive Black History Month museum in the library, with students presenting to classmates about influential figures in the fields of politics, entrepreneurship, entertainment and athletics. Led by counselor Julia Iannazzo, social worker Jenna Lovewell and teacher Kyle Weber, the students researched their topics and built presentations around their research.
More than 40 Eureka High students enjoyed a Black History Month trivia contest during AcLab. Presented by librarian Dr. Ashley Eiswirth and social worker April Welch and hosted by Educational Equity and Access Department Director Dr. Cassandra Suggs, the contest featured teams of students answering five rounds of questions, with prizes for winners and participants.
Westridge Elementary is celebrating Black History Month with displays in hallways around the school, as well as in the school's culture cabinet and with featured books in the library.
