Rockwood Middle School Celebrates Beloved Custodian Becoming a U.S. Citizen

Wildwood Middle custodian Gitta Schmidt has a unique reason to smile. Last week, Schmidt became a U.S. citizen after 41 years of living in the States.

“It feels great,” shared Schmidt, who came over to the U.S. at 18 years old. “I can finally exercise my right to vote and be a part of the whole democratic process.”

Students and staff at Wildwood wore red, white and blue on Aug. 20, and during lunchtime, they waved American flags and wished Schmidt congratulations on her accomplishment.

“It feels amazing,” she said. “I was very, very surprised and excited, and the kids were so excited for me.

"Everybody’s been very supportive. The teachers were quizzing me. I’ve heard a lot of congratulations from the kids.”

Principal Dr. Jason Lievanos was on hand for the momentous occasion.

“It was incredibly important to support Ms. Gitta because she and our entire custodial team are essential members of the Wildwood family,” Lievanos said. “We wanted to show her how much we appreciate her hard work and dedication. Our staff saw how much time and effort she put into studying, often quizzing her throughout the day to help her prepare for the exam.”

Lievanos said this wasn't just a recognition moment. It was a powerful learning experience for the students.

“By witnessing Ms. Gitta's journey, they saw our democratic system in action firsthand, transforming an abstract concept into a tangible, inspiring event,” he said. “It's one thing to read about citizenship in a textbook and another to cheer on someone you know as they complete that process.”

Lievanos shared that involving the kids in this celebration gave them a unique opportunity to witness the commitment and perseverance it takes to become a citizen.

“It allowed them to be part of her journey and celebrate with her, reinforcing the idea that we are all part of one community, working together and supporting each other," he said.
