Rockwood Schools Celebrate Reading Weeks, Missouri School Read-In Day
Schools around the Rockwood School District are hosting a variety of fun, educational, reading-themed activities leading up to Rockwood Reading Day and Missouri School Read-In Day, both of which are on Friday, March 14.
Here's a look at some of our students and staff celebrating the occasion!
Blevins Elementary
Blevins students experienced an ocean-themed "Dive into Reading" week. They read their favorite book while lying on a beach towel or sitting in a folding beach chair. Reading Week at Blevins was full of building-wide activities that encouraged literacy and the love of reading.
Geggie Elementary
At Geggie, students and staff had the opportunity to dress up in their favorite Disney and/or Marvel movie character. Each grade chose a book that has been turned into a movie. Fourth grade selected The Wizard of Oz, and third grade picked The Lorax.
Kehrs Mill Elementary
At Kehrs Mill, Reading Week was filled with themed dress-up days, guest readers, morning trivia questions, buddy activities, a book character tournament and opportunities to dive into pages of captivating stories. Librarian Heidi Metz organized a Book Drive where students brought in new or gently used books that were donated to a school in St. Louis City.
One of the week's highlights was when the students heard from a local children's book author, Mr. Aaron Wills. He visited with kindergarten through second-grade students and read We Mix Up the ABCs. Students actively participated in singing along to his book and learning about his writing process.
Ballwin Elementary
Ballwin Elementary designed its reading week around the book "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" by Kate DiCamillo, about a toy rabbit who becomes lost and voyages around the world.
The school planned daily spirit days, daily DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) times and hosted contests such as "Morning Edward Jep-Bear-Dy" trivia during announcements and a "Guess Who's Behind the Stuffie" game in the display case in the main hallway. There are also Edward Tulane-themed decorations up all around the school.
Kellison Elementary
Students at Kellison Elementary enjoyed their time at "Camp Read-a-Lot" this week, stopping in with their classmates for some quiet reading time in a campground setting, complete with tents and artificial campfires!
Bowles Elementary
Rockwood Summit High football players returned to their elementary schools -- including Bowles -- during the week to read to kindergarten through second-graders as part of the Connor Ballance Project, started in memory of a former Falcons football player. Lafayette High
The Lafayette High library celebrated Rockwood Reading and Missouri School Read-In Day on Friday with a day of quiet reading time and sweet treats for students. Nearly 40 classes totaling nearly 700 students signed up for quiet reading throughout the day.
