Rockwood Students Earn Regional Accolades in Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Competition

Lafayette High student artists Michelle Chen and Luke Hinton and Marquette High student artists Sabrina Larue, Katelyn Skiles and Lindsay Wang earned recognition in the Midwest regional round of this year's Scholastic Art and Writing Award competition.

Awarded annually since 1923, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens. Students can earn Gold Keys and Silver Keys for their work, and those who earn a Gold Key at the regional level are automatically entered into consideration for the National Arts and Writing Awards, which will be announced at the end of March. The Midwest region covers five states, and only around 260 entries earned Gold Keys and around 340 earned Silver Keys in the region.

Hinton earned three Gold Keys for his sculpture and ceramics and glass work, and one of his pieces - "Mother's Egg" - has been nominated for the American Visions Award at the national level. Only up to five pieces from each region can be nominated, with one winner selected from each region. Chen earned a Gold Key for her painting, Larue for ceramics and glass work and Skiles for her illustration.

Hinton also earned a Silver Key and honorable mention, Chen earned three Silver Keys, Skiles earned two Silver Keys, and Wang earned two honorable mentions.
