Rockwood Summit Senior Earns Rosemary Zander Award from SSD

Auden Sellmeyer, a Rockwood Summit High senior, is one of this year's 14 recipients of the Rosemary Zander Award from the Special School District (SSD) of St. Louis County.

Since 1988, students have been recognized for the Rosemary Zander Award due to their accomplishments in academics, arts, athletics, communications, vocational training, employment, independent living skills, community service and extracurricular activities. Recipients are chosen by a panel of SSD judges who carefully review and score the many nominations submitted each year, poring over the heartfelt and thoughtful words of SSD staff who clearly think the world of their students. While it makes the selection challenging, it is also a true testament to the special work of SSD.

"Auden has demonstrated exceptional resilience and determination in overcoming learning challenges," Erica Zengerling, South Technical High School veterinary assistant instructor, said in a release on the SSD website. "Despite initial struggles, she discovered effective strategies and support through tutoring and various therapies. Her dedication to her education and passion for animals propelled her to excel in South Tech’s Veterinary Assistant Program while also maintaining a busy schedule of lacrosse, A+ tutoring and work at a veterinary hospital. Her ability to overcome obstacles and succeed reflects her outstanding character and determination."

Sellmeyer is also one of this year's four recipients of the SSD Bonhomme Lions Club Scholarship. She will be honored alongside this year's other SSD students award recipients -- including Eureka High students Glayden Douglas and Timothy Smith -- at the 2024 Inspiring Futures celebration, event hosted by SSD and the Special Education Foundation to celebrate SSD student achievers, on May 9 at the Emerson Auditorium in St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield.
