Rockwood Releases Timeline for Secondary Students' Return to Classrooms

October 16, 2020

SuptMarkMiles
Dear Rockwood School Community:

As your superintendent, I want to assure you that my focus remains on our students' academic, social, emotional, and physical well-being. We have been working diligently on our gradual phase-in plan for a safe return to the classroom. As our elementary students move forward with in-person learning, we look to offer our secondary students that same opportunity.

I understand that every family has their perspective about the best educational option for their children. We have a lot of information to share, with even more on the way in the coming weeks. Please take a moment to read through the timelines below for both middle school and high school:

Middle School

When will our middle school students have the option to return to the classroom?

We have two dates to note for our students to return to in-person learning five days a week in our Rockwood middle schools:

  • Wednesday, Nov. 4: Sixth-grade students return.
  • Thursday, Nov. 5: Seventh-grade and eighth-grade students return.
  • Note: Our sixth-grade students' earlier return date allows for an orientation as they transition to a new school. They will then continue with the rest of the middle school students the next day.
Will Rockwood middle school families continue to have the option of online learning at home?

Yes, Rockwood will continue to offer online learning for middle students who wish to continue learning from home.

When will middle school families indicate the educational preference for their children?

On Friday, Oct. 16, Rockwood will send an email to parents of middle school students. In this message, families need to indicate which educational plan they have chosen. We will also share links to our website that will offer more information about both the at-home and at-school programs for middle school. We want to provide our families with as much information as possible as they make a decision for their children's learning. The deadline for response is Wednesday, Oct. 21.

High School

When will our high school students have the option to return to the classroom?

We have two dates to note for our students to return to in-person learning five days a week in our Rockwood high schools:

  • Wednesday, Nov. 11: Freshman orientation for 9th-grade students.
  • Thursday, Nov. 12: Sophomores, juniors and seniors return.
  • Note: The earlier return date for our freshmen allows for a one-day orientation as they transition to a new school. They will then continue with the rest of the high school students the next day.
Will Rockwood high school families continue to have the option of online learning at home?

Yes, Rockwood will continue to offer online learning for high school students who wish to continue learning from home.

When will high school families indicate the educational preference for their children?

On Friday, Oct. 23, Rockwood will send an email to parents of high school students. In this message, families need to indicate which educational plan they have chosen. We will also share links to our website that will offer more information about both the at-home and at-school opportunities for high school. We want to provide our families with as much information as possible as they make the decision for their children's learning. The deadline for this decision is Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Health and Wellness

Where will I find information about the safety of in-person learning at our Rockwood schools?

Out of care and concern, our top priority for students, families, and staff will always be health and safety. You'll find information health and wellness information on our Rockwood Safe Together website, which offers an overview of school district processes for face masks, social distancing, hand hygiene, and more.

Questions?

As always, we are here to help with any questions you may have. Please feel free to contact your principal with specific questions about your school. If you need answers to district-level questions, please contact me or my district leadership team.

Be assured; I look forward to welcoming our secondary students back to the classroom.  We are excited and looking forward to a safe and successful return to school while continuing to support our virtual learners at home. Thank you for your partnership as we do whatever it takes to provide the best education for our Rockwood students.

Be safe and be healthy,
Dr. Mark Miles
