    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

I hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather we are having this Sunday. I know that many of you have seen me limping around campus this past week. Unfortunately, I tore the meniscus in my right knee and will have surgery this week. It will be an outpatient surgery, so I will be back in action quickly. I greatly appreciate our kids and staff who have demonstrated such kindness and support. I smile when I think about the many times our kids have said, "Dr. B., you shouldn't be moving around so much when you're hurt!" Our kids have such big hearts.

As we move into our week, remember that MAP testing will begin on April 13. Please ensure that your child is in attendance on the dates below and that he/she comes to school well rested. If possible, please send your child to school with a calculator on the day of MATH testing as well as non-bluetooth headphones (no airpods) compatible with the Chromebook each day of testing. Finally, please ensure your child’s Chromebook is fully charged the morning of testing.

    6th Grade
    • April 13th - Math all sessions
    • April 19th - ELA all sessions
    7th Grade
    • April 14th - Math all sessions
    • April 20th - ELA all sessions
    8th Grade
    • April 15th - Math all sessions
    • April 20th - ELA session during language arts class
    • April 21st - ELA all other sessions
    • April 27th - Science all sessions
    Virtual Students
    April 16th
    April 23rd
For our virtual students, it is important to note the following:

    • Breakfast and snacks will be provided on both days. Students may bring their own lunch and snacks as well.
    • No lunch will be provided to 6th or 7th graders since their testing will conclude before noon unless your child is staying late with an 8th grade sibling.
    • If you would like to arrange for your child to be picked up when he/she is finished testing, please communicate this with your child and make arrangements for pickup.
    • Virtual students will receive asynchronous work from their teachers on the days of MAP testing for their in-person classmates. Students will also be excused from classes on the virtual Fridays that they are taking the MAP test at South.
As we continue into April, it's time to prepare for our 4th Quarter Parent-Teacher Conferences. Just like during our other semesters, parents will have the opportunity to conference with their child(ren)’s teachers either through email exchange or via Zoom conferences. We will hold our conferences on Thursday, April 22nd from 3:30-7:00 p.m.

If a Zoom conference is the preferred method of communication, parents may sign up for a conference slot with a teacher using this Conference Links Document. Once you access the document, simply look for your child's teachers and click on each of their names. This will take you to the teacher's Sign Up Genius where you will select the time for your conference.

Each of your child's teachers will send a follow-up email by 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21st sharing a Zoom link to the conference session to those parents who have made appointments. As a reminder, conference appointments will be brief, 7 minutes in length, in order to accommodate as many parents as possible while still allowing time for discussion.

There is a limited number of slots available, so we ask parents to focus on courses where you have questions or concerns with your child’s progress when signing up for Zoom conferences and utilizing email as a means to check-in on courses for which you do not have questions or concerns. We ask that multiple parents for the same child do not sign up for separate appointments with an individual teacher. If you are unable to secure a conference time with a teacher, please contact that teacher to make other arrangements.

We will accept sign-ups for conferences until 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21st. After this time, you must contact individual teachers to receive the Zoom Link for conferences.

*If your availability changes and you are no longer able to attend your conference appointments, please cancel your appointments through Sign Up Genius to free up those slots for another parent.

We greatly appreciate your partnership and support. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850.

    CELEBRATIONS DURING MAP TESTING!

In an effort to reward our South students with a treat during our MAP testing dates, one gesture is care of The Malt Shop! The owner, Bart, is donating a small ice cream for EACH student during one of the lunch shifts April 15, 20, 21, 27th. We will plan to stagger this offering throughout these days. For those students who have dietary restrictions and/or allergy concerns, we are planning to supplement the ice cream offerings with popsicles with allergen-free ingredients.

We are attaching the ingredients for the ice cream flavors of chocolate and vanilla below. Please review these ingredients with your son or daughter or both, to help him, her, or them to make an informed decision on what treat to choose on their given MAP day when these are offered during lunch shifts!

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM OUR NURSE

Spring is approaching. With spring comes seasonal allergies for many children. Allergy symptoms are very similar to symptoms of COVID-19. They are nearly indistinguishable without COVID-19 testing. If your child normally suffers from seasonal allergies in the spring, it may be good to start giving them their daily allergy medicine. Forecasts this year are predicting a severe allergy season so it would be wise to get ahead of this before it becomes an issue. IF YOUR CHILD IS HAVING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS THEY SHOULD STAY HOME OR SEE A DOCTOR (even if you believe the symptoms are from allergies):

    • Runny or stuffy nose
    • Sore throat
    • Headache
    • Body aches/chills
    • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
    • Fever (100.0 or higher)
    • Cough
    • Difficulty breathing
    • Loss of taste/smell
Students must stay home for at least 24 hours after symptoms resolve. So, when a student has one or more of the above symptoms, they should still stay home from school the next day when they are starting to feel better.

Being proactive with seasonal allergies can help prevent missed school days for your child.

    PERSONALIZED MATH SUPPORT

Looking for a way to improve math skills? DreamBox is a digital math program for grades K-8 that combines a fun and engaging math learning environment with a rigorous, standards-based curriculum. DreamBox lessons are interactive experiences that promote active learning and independent critical thinking and respond to each student’s strategies and decisions in the moment. This enables DreamBox to individually tailor the instructional experience for each student based on the strategies they use when working through lessons. Because DreamBox dynamically adapts lessons and learning paths based on the needs of each learner, students always have just the right level of support when and where they need it. Parent Guide.

    Home Usage Best Practices:
    • Plan at least 20-30 minutes for each session. Students should complete at least 5 lessons per week. Students who complete 5 or more lessons per week experience the most growth.
    • Since DreamBox is personalized to each learner based on their strategies and understanding, it’s important to let your child work through lessons within their own account.
    • Use the Activity Feed in your Family Insight Dashboard to monitor your child’s progress. If they are stuck on a lesson, you can view it by hitting the ‘Play Lesson’ button and help guide them with a facilitated discussion. Try to avoid helping them directly in the student environment.

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

Happy April! I hope you are enjoying this gorgeous Spring Weekend. Remember, our students will not have school tomorrow as our staff will participate in all-day professional development.

Our 4th-quarter began successfully last week. It's hard to believe we are in the final stretch of our school year. As we surge ahead into April, remember that we will hold Virtual Parent-Teacher Conferences for our students' 4th-quarter classes on Thursday, April 22 from 3:30-7:00 p.m. We will share sign-up information for these conferences in our newsletter next weekend.

Also, please remember that our students will participate in MAP Testing this month. The State of Missouri and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) have set the guidelines for assessments this year, which include in-person testing for all students in grades 3-8 and for End of Course (EOC) exams at the middle and high school levels. The dates below reflect the MAP testing days for each grade level. Please ensure that your child is in attendance on these dates and that he/she comes to school well-rested. If possible, please send your child to school with a calculator on the day of MATH testing as well as non-Bluetooth headphones compatible with the Chromebook each day of testing. We greatly appreciate your support while we navigate testing a little differently during this unprecedented time.

Wednesday (4/7) we will also celebrate Paraprofessional Day. Paraprofessionals perform a variety of teacher-related jobs and often assist teachers in classrooms. They may work with students on supplemental enrichment activities, either in small groups or one-on-one. They may also help students complete assignments or practice reading. Paraprofessionals often work with students with special education needs and a variety of disabilities. They may also supervise students outside of classrooms and help teachers with clerical work.

Please join me in expressing our thanks to all of our paraprofessionals at Rockwood South for their hard work and dedication to our students and school.

They offer invaluable assistance and guidance to our students. Please join us in honoring our librarians and thanking them for the service they provide.

In honor of National Library Week, we will be having a spirit week on April 4th-10th. Check out the flyer for the details.

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

I hope you had a relaxing Spring Break and are ready to begin our 4th and final quarter of the school year. We welcome back all students who are returning to in-person learning for the 4th-quarter.

To support all of our students in being successful this quarter, please review our school-wide procedures with your students:

    • Students that ride the bus will be dismissed from their bus by a staff member beginning at 7:15 am. Students may then choose to eat breakfast in the cafeteria or will report to their first class of the day where they will remain until school begins at 7:47 a.m.
    • Students who are being dropped off by car can enter the building as early as 7:00 a.m. Please note that our students do not begin their first class until 7:47 a.m. In addition, it is important to remember that with our buses and the number of parents who will drop students off in the morning, our drop-off process will take time. Please be patient and plan accordingly.
    • For all information specific to the procedures we will use at Rockwood South, please view this important document.
    • Please remind your student that phones must be OFF AND OUT OF SIGHT during our school day.
    • Please review with your student their schedule on Infinite Campus and this map of our school. I have also provided a picture below this letter, for your viewing. The 6th-grade section is lined out with red arrows.
We will review our cafeteria and dismissal procedures with our students during the school day on Monday, March 29.

In addition to the start of the 4th-quarter, it is also time to prepare for MAP Testing. The State of Missouri and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) have set the guidelines for assessments this year, which include in-person testing for all students in grades 3-8 and for End of Course (EOC) exams at the middle and high school levels. The Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) helps gauge district, school, and individual student performance on state standards and grade-level expectations. As you may recall, MAP (and EOC) testing was canceled last year. Therefore, the last state data we have from assessments is now two years old. This is an opportunity to capture an accurate assessment of where students are at and DESE has indicated that they do plan to release individual student scores for parents. The results will not affect student grades or their permanent record.

It is important to note that the state has included all virtual students in their guidelines and requires that virtual students take the tests in person in a proctored environment. If you have a student learning virtually for the 4th-quarter, you should have received an email on March 19th asking you to complete a quick Google Form about MAP testing. If you did not receive this communication, please contact Assistant Principal, Jessica Bergtholdt.

    6th Grade
April 13th - Math all sessions
April 19th - ELA all sessions

    7th Grade
April 14th - Math all sessions
April 20th - ELA all sessions

    8th Grade
April 15th - Math all sessions
April 20th - ELA session during language arts class
April 21st - ELA all other sessions
April 27th - Science all sessions

    Virtual Students
April 16th - Math (all grade levels) & Science (8th grade only)
**If you are enrolled in Algebra 1 or Geometry you do not need to attend Math sessions
April 23rd - ELA all sessions

**Virtual students will receive asynchronous work from their teachers on the days of MAP testing for their in-person classmates. Students will also be excused from classes on the virtual Fridays that they are taking the MAP test at South.

Last but not least, it is already time to begin preparing for the next school year. Please review the Schedule Change/Request Procedures. It is important to note that the following for making a request for an upcoming school year:

Please be proactive: If you need to place a schedule request for a teacher, course level, team, or for any other reason the request must be made in writing/email and submitted to an RSMS School Counselor on or before May 1. Please keep in mind that scheduling is dependent on many variables and it is not always possible to meet every request; schedule requests cannot be confirmed prior to orientation.

There will not be any changes to teams or teachers after schedules have been released.

We are excited about continuing our mission to discover, connect, and make a difference during our final quarter of school. Please remember that our teachers will continue working with both in-person and online learners during this semester. We ask for your continued patience, grace, and increased communication with our teachers as we work together to support our students. I am confident about the commitment and unity of our Falcon Family!

We appreciate your partnership and support. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850.

After a busy week, I hope you were able to relax and recharge this weekend. I really can't believe that we are headed into our final week before Spring Break! Due to this, we will not have another newsletter until the weekend before we return to school on Monday, March 29.

In the meantime, remember that beginning Monday, March 15, you will have an opportunity to select an in-person or virtual option for your student for the 2021-2022 school year.

    Please note:
    • Before making this decision, please visit the district website to learn more about what the online options for grades K-8 may look like.
    • The purpose of this enrollment is for those students who wish to learn virtually next year, regardless of the status of the pandemic.
    • The goal for next year includes significant changes to the online instructional model. Please carefully consider which learning model is best for each of your children.
    • Unlike this year, there will not be options to switch between online and in-person learning throughout the year. The district is dedicating staffing based on the selection you make, which will be for the entire 2021-2022 school year.
    • The dedicated teacher your child is assigned for online learning may not be a teacher from your child’s school. Virtual teachers may have students in their online class from multiple schools.
    • If you do not complete the form, the default option, in-person learning, will be selected for your child.
Beginning Monday, please access your student’s enrollment form on the district website and make a selection no later than Sunday, March 21. You will be asked to choose between in-person or online learning. Please refer to the district website for information about the 2021-2022 virtual model. The district task force is currently working on the specifics of what we can and will offer next year, but this will give you an idea of what the online offerings will look like at the elementary and middle school levels.

Also this week, our 6th-grade PE classes will learn about 4E Training during their PE classes. Please note that this is in lieu of a traditional Intruder Drill. In this format, Officer Martin, RSMS SRO, will provide our students with important information, option steps, and a greater understanding of what they should do if an intruder would ever enter our school. This experience allows our students to ask questions of Officer Martin in an effort to provide safety and confidence to all students. Our 7th and 8th grade PE classes will participate in this informational session after Spring Break. If you would like to preview the information our students will learn this month, please view the RSMS 4E video. You are welcome to reach out to me with any questions.

As always, I appreciate your support and partnership. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850.

NJHS NEEDS USED SPORTS GEAR AND EQUIPMENT!

The NJHS Fitness committee is asking for gently used sports' gear/equipment to be donated by our South families. The committee plans to sell the equipment to Play It Again Sports and donate the money to the foundation, Challenged Athletes, which will distribute the gear/equipment to special needs athletes. We also intend to offer some of the equipment/gear to our Fenton TASK (Team Activities for Special Kids) organization before our sales. This drive goes from March 8 through March 19. Thanks for the support! Donations can be dropped in/by the boxes in the front lobby!

NJHS PIE IN THE FACE CONTEST IS COMING!

The NJHS School Spirit committee is running a Pie-in-the-Face contest this week, March 15-18, with the teachers receiving the most votes getting "pie-d" on Friday, March 19 during lunch shifts. Students may bring in $1 for 3 votes (represented by 3 tickets they may place in the bags of the teachers they choose), and they may vote as many times as they'd like! ALSO, students may put their names on these tickets for another $1 (per the original 3) if they would like to be "in the running" for their ticket to be pulled to actually DO the "pie-ing," themselves! Voting will be set up in the lobby in the morning for students to vote as well as in the lunch shifts Monday-Thursday.

The proceeds from this fundraiser will go toward the education funds of Gift and Hope, our sponsored teens in Nairobi, Kenya, whom we have supported for the last 3 years through Under the Same Tree foundation. We are dedicated to these friends who are, like us, this year experiencing a virtual learning situation with much need and dependence on technology!

    FRIDAY, MARCH 5, 2021

March 5, 2021 Permanent Link to Post

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

Welcome to March. I know the saying is that March comes in like a Lion and out like a Lamb, however, this weather has been beautiful! Spring Break is definitely around the corner.

Throughout the 2020-2021 school year, Rockwood has remained flexible to do our very best for students in the ever-changing COVID-19 environment. We have worked hard to support students and families by offering two instructional models: Rockwood At School and Rockwood At Home.

One of the positive implications of the past year has been that some students and families have found that they prefer learning in a virtual environment. Increasing online and blended learning opportunities for students is an academic goal that is outlined in The Way Forward, the district’s five-year strategic plan, and we are pleased to share that Rockwood will continue to have virtual options for students next year.

Our schools work diligently on their class lists and teacher assignments for each school year. Our high schools are already working with students on their schedules for next year and speaking with students individually about their course options, both in-person and virtual. To ensure we are able to complete that process for our elementary and middle school students, it is essential that we identify those students now who wish to learn virtually next year.

Beginning Monday, March 15, you will have an opportunity to select an in-person or virtual option for your student for the 2021-2022 school year.

As we continue to plan for next year, I would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to our very own, Assistant Principal Cassandra Suggs, who was just named as the next Building Principal of Wildwood Middle School in the Rockwood School District. Please see the letter to you from Principal Suggs, below.

To My Dear Rockwood South Family,

I write this letter with mixed emotions. Many of you may have heard the song “We’ve only just begun” by the Carpenters. That song is running through my mind right now. The chorus speaks of just beginning to live and all the promises. I made promises to your family, I told you I would love on and take care of your children. I said I would support your families and our staff to the very best of my ability. I tried my best to keep every promise and I have enjoyed every single day at Rockwood South Middle, I mean every single day.

Recently, I was given the opportunity to be the head principal at Wildwood Middle School and I accepted that offer. I started off this letter saying I had mixed emotions, and the reason is because I truly love all of your families and our children, yes our children because I look at your children as my own. Now, I have to leave and lead in a different space and that brings sadness for leaving, but there is joy in having the new opportunity. My desire is that you know how much I have enjoyed being a part of your lives. Yes, I will be moving on, but I am only an email away ( I still have the same email) so please do not call this moment goodbye, but instead so long.

Thank you so very much for welcoming me into your world and for supporting me on this journey. It has been my absolute pleasure to serve you and every moment has been special. I want to thank Dr. Laurie Birkenmeier for giving me the opportunity to serve alongside her and for her ongoing support and encouragement. “We’ve only just begun” to make a positive impact on our children. Please continue the work, our kids deserve it.

    With my deepest sincerity,

Now and always – Your Assistant Principal Cassandra Walker Suggs

Please join me in congratulating Principal Suggs on her new position within our district. I have no doubt that she will continue to make a positive impact in her new role. She will be deeply missed by all of us. In the weeks to come, I will share more information with you regarding our process to select a new Assistant Principal.

As always, I appreciate your support and partnership. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850.

    With Falcon Pride,

    Laurie

Parents can’t afford to ignore the pressures their children face to try drugs and alcohol. From school hallways to social media to pop culture, your child lives in a world that encourages substance use. Rockwood parents can view the film DON'T WAIT from Addiction is Real for FREE online now through March 2, 2021. A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

I hope you are enjoying our final day of February. It's hard to believe that March is here and soon, we will be heading into our fourth quarter!

Speaking of our fourth quarter, remember that today is the deadline to make a change in your child’s enrollment in Rockwood At Home and Rockwood At School for the fourth quarter. If you would like to change your child’s enrollment option starting March 29 for middle and high school students, please complete this Change of Enrollment Status form. This selection will be in place through the end of the school year, June 3.

    Please note the following:
    • Parents only need to complete this form if they wish to change their child(ren)’s enrollment status through the end of the school year.
    • If a change is needed, parents and guardians will have through Sunday, Feb. 28, to make their selection on the Rockwood Change of Enrollment Status form. This process will ensure schools complete planning for physical space, staffing and scheduling.
    • If your child has a change in transportation needs due to an enrollment change for the fourth quarter, please inform your school directly so they can notify the transportation department to plan accordingly.
    • If you have questions, please visit our Rockwood website or contact your grade-level or school principal for more information.
As a reminder, all students (both in-person and virtual) will engage in virtual learning on the following dates in the fourth quarter: Friday, April 16; Friday, April 23; and Friday, April 30. Virtual days are when in-person learners stay home from school and connect with their teacher and online classmates via Zoom learning activities. Virtual days offer more opportunities for students to connect online and allow teachers time to plan, as well as an opportunity to connect with students who may need individual help in learning. Additional information about virtual days can be found on the district website.

Please take note that this Friday, March 5th, will also be a Virtual Learning Day, thus, all students will need to follow our Virtual Learning Day schedule.

Last but not least, we appreciate your participation in our parent-teacher conferences last week! Remember that we will have conferences during our fourth quarter on April 22.

We greatly appreciate your support and partnership. As always, please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850. Let's have a great March!

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

After a super short week of learning with some unexpected snow days, it looks like we are in for another week of cold, snowy weather. Brrrr! Although our week was short, we have much to celebrate from last week:

    • Our National Junior Honor Society raised over $400 for the American Cancer Society with Lollipops for Leukemia. Thank you to everyone who participated in sending messages of kindness and ultimately supporting this worthy cause.
    • We recognized SIX RSMS members who were nominated for the RSD ROSE AWARD. Congratulations to Christina Patrick (nurse), Jackie King (teacher), Colin Hunt (teacher), Tess Larson (teacher), Patty Yoss (teacher), and Angela Winkler (Parent and PSO President).
    • Dr. Miles participated in our Black History Month celebration by sharing information about Louis Armstrong with our school community during our morning announcements.
    • Nearly 400 people participated in the Rockwood One Read Panel Event for the Book Stamped.
    • The RSMS staff participated in professional learning focused on personalized learning and culturally relevant teaching to best meet the needs of all students.
Yes, our week was short, yet sweet! As we continue into February, it's time to prepare for our 3rd Quarter Parent-Teacher Conferences. Just like during our first semester, parents will have the opportunity to conference with their child(ren)’s teachers either through email exchange or via Zoom conferences. We will hold our conferences on Thursday, February 25 from 3:30-7:00 p.m.

If a Zoom conference is the preferred method of communication, parents may sign up for a conference slot with a teacher using this Conference Links Document. Once you access the document, simply look for your child's teachers and click on each of their names. This will take you to the teacher's Sign Up Genius where you will select the time for your conference.

Each of your child's teachers will send a follow-up email by 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 24, sharing a Zoom link to the conference session to those parents who have made appointments.

We will accept sign-ups for conferences until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 23. After this time, you must contact individual teachers to receive the Zoom Link for conferences.

*If your availability changes and you are no longer able to attend your conference appointments, please cancel your appointments through Sign Up Genius to free up those slots for another parent.

Again, you may use this link to sign up for conference appointments.

We greatly appreciate your support. As always, please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850. Stay warm!

OPPORTUNITIES FROM THE RSD COMMUNITY PARTNERS IN PREVENTION

The prevention film, DON’T WAIT, was created to provide parents with the knowledge and empowerment they need to immediately start implementing drug prevention in their home. The film features Rockwood parents, and all of the children’s voiceovers are Rockwood students!

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

I hope you are enjoying this cold, snowy, Super Bowl Weekend! As we prepare to surge ahead through the month of February, please see below for reminders and important information for our week.

    • This course selection window to register for elective and exploratory classes for the next school year will close on Monday, Feb. 8. Remember, decisions about the in-person or virtual learning models will come later in the semester.
    • For our month of HEART, our National Junior Honor Society's Cancer Awareness committee will be selling "Partnered Lollipops" with an informative message about Cancer Awareness. Students may purchase these for friends, teachers, relatives, themselves beginning Monday, February 8 and ending Wednesday, February 10--a quick sale--for $1! These will be for sale in the lobby before school and during Homeroom for those interested. The Lollipops and messages will be delivered during lunch shifts on Thursday, Feb. 11.
    • Help us participate in the NJHS Cancer Awareness Spirit Day on Thursday, February 11th! 6th grade wears white, 7th grade wears red, 8th grade wears pink.
    • We will continue to celebrate Black History Month with our morning announcement spotlights of heroic individuals who have impacted our nation. This week, we welcome our Superintendent, Dr. Miles, who will participate in sharing information about Louis Armstrong with our students.
    • Students will not have school on Friday, February 12, or on Monday, February 15.
Last but not least, I want to share a new resource with you for any student interested in obtaining math support. A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

I hope you are having a great weekend.  We appreciate your help with our dismissal process this week. From the feedback I received, our surrounding neighborhoods have far fewer drivers parking their cars to wait for students. Thank you!

Please remember that our dismissal process takes time due to having only one entrance/exit to our school grounds. Unlike Disney World, we do not have a Fast Pass...therefore, we must work together to follow the guidelines and ensure the safety of our kids. Please be patient and aware of other drivers while waiting; there should be a space reserved between drivers at both of the Kellison driveways to allow for elementary families to access the school. Also, please remember that we only have room for one line of cars to proceed on our driveway. Therefore, drivers coming from both directions on Hawkins will need to merge into one line. Again, this will take time, awareness, and understanding. Again, we appreciate your help as we have more parents picking up our students this year than ever before.

As we head into the month of February, we are excited to celebrate Black History Month. During the entire month of February, we will spotlight an African American person who has contributed to America, as part of our morning announcements. The objective is to teach about African Americans who have been inventors, doctors, and more! We also look forward to an amazing performance (video recorded of course) by our RSMS Choir as they sing "Lift every voice and sing".

For this week, I would like to remind you that on Monday, February 1st, our middle school students will begin to register for elective and exploratory classes for the next school year. This course selection window will close on Monday, Feb. 8. Remember, decisions about the in-person or virtual learning models will come later in the semester.

Last but not least, I want to share a new resource with you that has been added to the RSD Rockwood Safe Together site, "School Nurse News". This site will be a page where our district communications department will place answers to frequently asked questions that our nurses receive from our school communities.

Here is a link to the page: https://www.rsdmo.org/safetogether/health/Pages/School-Nurse-News.aspx.

We greatly appreciate your support. As always, please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850.

Guidance and Counseling is an integral part of Rockwood's total education program. With this in mind, we invite you to show your appreciation for the tremendous impact our counselors have in helping our students achieve school success and personal growth.
If you would like to send your child's counselor a note of appreciation, you are welcome to do so using the following email addresses linked below:

    LIBRARY SURVEY

The mission of the Rockwood South Library Media Program is to provide a well-organized collection of quality materials and diverse resources that supports the curriculum, increases academic achievement, and encourages the development of lifelong learners and readers. We frequently survey our students to help the library continue to meet their needs. As an added effort to make sure we are meeting the needs of all of our students and families, we would appreciate you filling out this short Google Form to give us feedback from a parent/guardian's perspective about the RSMS Library. In addition to completing this survey, always feel free to email Miss Rankins our school librarian at rankinsrachel@rsdmo.org with any questions and/or suggestions you may have.

    SUNDAY, JANUARY 24, 2021

January 24, 2021 Permanent Link to Post

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

I hope you had a relaxing weekend. Our last week in January will certainly be a busy one as we begin to consider enrollment for the 21-22 school year.

But first, we are in need of your help with our dismissal process. It has been brought to our attention that there are families who are not using our dismissal process and have chosen instead to park their cars in nearby subdivisions to wait for their children. I can't stress enough that while our dismissal process takes some time, it was designed for the safety of our students. Please be sure to follow our procedures and know that we greatly appreciate the vast majority of our families who do exactly that every day. Following our procedures will keep our kids safe, ensure that we are not causing traffic within subdivisions, and will provide a model for our kids by demonstrating that it is important for everyone to follow procedures that are created for the greater good of all. I know I can count on your help.

While I realize we just welcomed our students back for the third quarter, it is already time to start planning for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year. On Monday, Feb. 1, our middle school students will begin to register for elective and exploratory classes for the next school year. This course selection window will close on Monday, Feb. 8.

We hope you spend time together reviewing middle school course options as a family. Talk about your child’s interests, passions, and new things they might be considering. Our counselors will help guide our students through this process and answer any questions they may have about course selection and planning for the future.

As you think about this process, please keep in mind that students will only be selecting their classes during the Feb. 1-8 course selection window. Decisions about the in-person or virtual learning models will come later in the semester. Please know that we look to a return of normalcy for the 2021-2022 school year. With our Rockwood Safe Together mitigation efforts, along with the state of Missouri’s plan for the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine in the coming months, we are hopeful for a safe, healthy start to the school year in August 2021.

Last but not least, our school has been invited to partner with the staff of the CDC, Saint Louis University, and Washington University to help assess COVID-19 mitigation strategies. The study involves in-depth COVID-19 case and contact investigations of students and staff who have tested positive for COVID-19 or been identified as a close contact. Please know that participation is voluntary.

We certainly hope that we have no more cases of COVID-19 in our school community. If we do, our contact tracing team will ask these individuals if they would like to participate in the study. If they choose to do so, we will give their contact information to a staff member from Washington University who will follow up with more information.

We’ve faced ever-changing obstacles during this pandemic. We will continue to be flexible as we look to the future. Please know that we appreciate the ongoing partnership with our families. It has made all the difference for our students.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850.

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

It's hard to believe the second semester has arrived! Remember, we will continue with our quarter schedule for the second semester.

In addition to the continuation of our schedule, the following procedures from the first semester will remain in place for the second semester for our in-person learners:

    • Please review with your student their schedule on Infinite Campus and this map of our school. I have also provided a picture below this letter, for your viewing. The 6th-grade section is lined out with red arrows.
As we head into our weekend, please remember that our students will not have school on Monday, January 18, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

We are excited about continuing our mission to discover, connect, and make a difference during our second semester!

Have a wonderful weekend!

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

We had a great first week back to school. As a reminder, next week will be a shortened week as we finish out the first semester and prepare for the start of our second semester. With this in mind, please take note of the following information:

    • Thursday, January 14, will be an Early Release Day. As a result, the day will end for students at 11:32 a.m. You can see the class schedule on this link.
    • Due to our shortened day on January 14, we will use a grab and go style lunch prior to dismissal. Our students will be permitted to take lunch with them as they dismiss for the day. Please note that lunches may not be eaten on the school bus.
    • Our students will not have school on Friday, January 15, or on Monday, January 18.
    • The second semester will begin on Tuesday, January 19, 2021.
In addition to the above information, please remember that Rockwood families have until Saturday, Jan. 9, to change their child’s enrollment status for the beginning of the second semester through our Change of Enrollment Status form.

Parents and guardians may change their child’s enrollment status to either Rockwood at Home or Rockwood at School for the start of the second semester, which begins Jan. 19. It is important to note that this selection will be in place through March 26.

If you do not wish to change your child’s enrollment, you do not have to fill out this form. Schools will contact families who fill out the form to confirm their enrollment status and whether a change in their student’s transportation is necessary. If you have questions regarding transportation for the second semester, please contact our registrar, Ellen Heskett, at 636-891-6853.

Early in March, we will reach out to families again. At that time, you will be provided another opportunity to change your child’s enrollment option through the end of the school year if needed.

On another note, beginning with the second semester, all students will have the opportunity to purchase a-la-carte items (ice cream, snacks, and more), however, to purchase these items, students must place money in their lunch account. We will still offer our standard lunch for free through the conclusion of this school year.

Last but not least, we appreciate your continued cooperation to keep our students and staff safe by monitoring your child’s health symptoms daily. The Rockwood Student Scenario Sheet will provide you with the information you need to know when it is best to keep your child home. If you feel your child is developing symptoms, has been in close contact with a positive case, or if someone in the household is symptomatic and awaiting a test result, please keep your child home from school. Students who feel well can attend their classes virtually via Zoom. Please continue to call in your child’s absence even if they are attending class virtually to our attendance line at 636-891-6865 or email our attendance secretary, Kathy Clote, at clotekathy@rsdmo.org

I hope you have a wonderful weekend! We greatly appreciate your support. As always, please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850.

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful winter break and the happiest of holidays! I'm looking forward to an amazing 2021 and excited to return to school on Monday with our kids. I have no doubt that this year we will continue to learn and care for one another while living our mission to discover, connect, and make a difference. I also know that our Falcon Family is up for the challenge. 2021, here we come!

As we head into our week, please take note of the following:
    • As a reminder, Second Semester Schedules were published, via Infinite Campus, on Friday, December 18.
    • The second semester will begin on Tuesday, January 19, 2021.
    • The third quarter virtual learning days for the third quarter are as follows: 1/29, 2/5, 2/26, 3/5, 3/12. We will continue to use this Virtual Learning Day Schedule.
    • The Rockwood Communications Department will provide information this week regarding enrollment for the second semester. This information will support families in changing their child's enrollment status to either Rockwood at Home or Rockwood at School.
In addition, please take a moment, with your child, to review his or her second-semester schedule, keeping in mind the following important reminders:
    • Second-semester core schedules should match the first semester unless you are already aware of a change.
    • Due to the nature of this school year, we plan on students staying in their current level of class (challenge vs grade-level). If you have concerns regarding your child’s placement for the second semester, please reach out to your student's grade-level counselor.
    • Students in quarter-long or semester-long Encore classes will transition to a new class at the beginning of Semester 2.
    • Students in year-long Encore classes will remain in those courses per the Schedule Change Policy.
    • All schedule inquiries should be brought to the appropriate counselor by Monday, January 4, 2021. If you are missing an encore class, please be sure to contact your grade-level counselor as soon as possible!
As we move into our new year, please continue to provide us with feedback on what is going well and how we can improve. I know each of us believes in our kids and wants to make a positive difference in their lives. Through working together we can and will! A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

Happy December! I hope you had a restful Thanksgiving Break. It's hard to believe we are mid-way through the second quarter and quickly approaching our Winter Break. As our break nears closer, I'm sure you received the news from our Superintendent, Dr. Miles, regarding our virtual learning days on December 21 and 22. The Middle School Principals are in the process of developing a schedule for these days that will provide our teachers with an opportunity to support all of our students. We will share this information with you next week.

After a month of working with our students in our current model, with classes of at-home and in-person learners, we are in need of your feedback. The Rockwood Heartbeat Check-In Survey is an ongoing process to solicit feedback to meet the needs of all members of our school community. These checkpoints will be used to support re-entry transitions as we identify and respond to the needs of our students, staff, and families.

As part of these activities, parents are being asked to complete an online questionnaire (3-5 questions) that encourages them to reflect on their child's learning experience. To participate in the RSD Heartbeat Check-in Survey, use https://bit.ly/parentheartbeatms to complete the questions. We ask that you take this survey by Friday, December 11.

Our students will also take an RSD Heartbeat Check-In Survey, which will again be in the form of an online questionnaire (3-5 questions) that encourages our students to reflect on their own mindsets and approaches to learning. The information collected in both the parent and student questionnaire will be used by our school to support our efforts in providing online and in-person learning experiences.

Thank you in advance for your feedback and continual support! For additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850.

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

We have much to be thankful for as we head into our Thanksgiving Break and our Holiday Season. I'm sure we can all agree that through this challenging time, we now understand the many things we have taken for granted. I can share with you that I am grateful for each day we GET to learn with our students and staff. Coming to school and learning together may have been viewed as routine, however, I now view it for what it truly is: A GIFT.

I am also grateful for the RSMS staff who has worked tirelessly to implement a new way of learning to support both in-person and online learners simultaneously. It's hard to believe that our staff has only functioned in this way of learning for 13 DAYS. Finally, I am grateful for your grace in understanding that this style of teaching is new for our staff. I am also appreciative of your continued support and partnership throughout this challenging time. Never before has there been more of a need for us to work together to support our kids.

As we head into Thanksgiving, I ask each of us to consider those within our Falcon Community who have made a difference in our lives. Then, I challenge each of us to take the next step to thank that person. You can thank them publicly on Twitter, using the #RSMSrocks hashtag or on our Rockwood South Facebook Page to flood our community with positivity, or you can email that person directly. However the method, I am certain our appreciation for one another will bring smiles and a feeling of happiness as we head into our Holiday Season. Please join me in ending November with an attitude of gratitude!

On behalf of the Rockwood South Staff, I want to wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving. I truly hope you have an amazing break and are able to relax and enjoy quality time with your families. Since we will only have two days of school this week, please note that I will not send out a newsletter next weekend. As such, I will include all of the information you need for this week and next week in this newsletter.

Thank you, again, for your partnership, grace, and support! Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850.

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

I hope you are enjoying some relaxation this weekend. We all deserve it!

On behalf of the Rockwood South Staff, I want to thank you for your partnership during this challenging time. I know that in times of difficulty, it is easy to become frustrated and sometimes even look for someone to blame. I am greatly encouraged by the strength of our Falcon Family and the way in which we continue to communicate and support one another.

Each day, I see the tremendous work our teachers do to build community within their classrooms of both in-person and at-home learners. Each day, I see our kids giving their best to participate and achieve while supporting one another as learners and friends. Each day, we receive messages of support and encouragement from parents, which further strengthens our team. It is with the utmost confidence that I can say, together, our Falcon Family will conquer any challenge we face. With this in mind, please continue to reach out to us with questions, feedback, and ways in which we can improve our support for our kids.

As we move into our week, please pay careful attention to the following information:

    • Attendance Information for students who are under quarantine orders:  In accordance with guidelines from the Department of Education, all RSD teachers must mark any student who is under quarantine as ABSENT, because they are not onsite. Our attendance secretary will then go into the system and change the absence for all students under quarantine and participating through Zoom to either an EXCUSED absence or to a DESE excusal code of COVL. By using this process, the absence will not count against our students, and at the same time, we will be providing accurate reporting of attendance to the Department of Education.
    • Attendance information for students who are in-person learners, but who are Zooming from home: For any student who has selected in-person learning, but is Zooming into class from home, please contact your child's teachers and our attendance secretary, clotekathy@rsdmo.org to provide us with any dates on which your child will Zoom from home. Again, our teachers will need to mark your child absent as they are not onsite, however, our attendance secretary will change this to an excused absence. As such, the absence will not count against our students' attendance and we will provide accurate reporting of our onsite attendance to the Department of Education.
    • Virtual Parent-Teacher Conferences: Thursday, November 19 from 3:30-7:00 p.m. Parents may sign up for a conference slot with a teacher using this Conference Links Document. Once you access the document, simply look for your child's teachers and click on each of their names. This will take you to the teacher's Sign Up Genius where you will select the time for your conference. Remember, we will accept sign-ups for conferences until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17. After this time, you must contact individual teachers to receive the Zoom Link for conferences.
    • RSD Health Indicator Information: To see the most up-to-date information regarding the health indicators for each school, please access this Rockwood link: Health Indicators Dashboard.
    • Reminder regarding visitors to RSMS: The front office is closed to non-essential visitors. Parents need to call the school office to check a student in or out. We ask parents to please remain in the car, and a staff member will ensure your child safely reaches your car upon parent request. We are using a drop off bin outside the doors for forgotten items.
    • Please read the Keep Our Falcons Safe document which contains the RSD "COVID -19: What to Do If" Guidance for Students, pictured below this letter.
Thank you, again, for your partnership, grace, and support! Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850.

    RSMS Parent-Teacher Conferences

November 12, 2020 Permanent Link to Post

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Families,

We invite you to participate in our Fall Virtual Parent-Teacher Conferences. As we shared with you in our newsletter last weekend, parents will have the opportunity to conference with their child(ren)’s teachers either through email exchange or via Zoom conferences. We will hold our conferences on Thursday, November 19 from 3:30-7:00 p.m.

If a Zoom conference is the preferred method of communication, parents may sign up for a conference slot with a teacher using this Conference Links Document. Once you access the document, simply look for your child's teachers and click on each of their names. This will take you to the teacher's Sign Up Genius where you will select the time for your conference.

Each of your child's teachers will send a follow-up email by 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18, sharing a Zoom link to the conference session to those parents who have made appointments.

Remember, since Language Arts is a year-long course (unless your child's Language Arts class is CCLA), if you met with your child's teacher during our October conference times, you do not need to schedule a second appointment.

If you are unable to secure a conference time with a teacher, please contact that teacher to make other arrangements. We will accept sign-ups for conferences until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17. After this time, you must contact individual teachers to receive the Zoom Link for conferences.

*If your availability changes and you are no longer able to attend your conference appointments, please cancel your appointments through Sign Up Genius to free up those slots for another parent.

Again, you may use this link to sign up for conference appointments.

We appreciate all of your support and look forward to meeting with you for our virtual Fall Conferences. Please contact me if you have any questions.

    Attendance Information

Please note the following important information regarding our attendance process for students who are under quarantine orders and for students who are in-person learners, but zooming from home.

In accordance with guidelines from the Department of Education, all RSD teachers must mark any student who is under quarantine as ABSENT, because they are not onsite. Our attendance secretary will then go into the system and change the absence for all students under quarantine and participating through Zoom to either an EXCUSED absence or to a DESE excusal code of COVL. For any student who has selected in-person learning, but is Zooming into class from home, please contact your child's teachers and our attendance secretary, Kathy Clote, at clotekathy@rsdmo.org, to provide us with any dates of which your child will Zoom from home. Again, our teachers will need to mark your child absent as they are not onsite, however, our attendance secretary will change this to an excused absence. As such, the absence will not count against our students' attendance and we will provide accurate reporting of our onsite attendance to the Department of Education.
