    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

We have now completed our first quarter and are quickly headed toward November! This week, our students will begin their second-quarter classes. All course information, Zoom links for classes, and a welcome video from our teachers are available on Canvas.

Remember, this week all of our students will participate in class through online learning and will continue to use our online learning schedule. Beginning on Wednesday, November 4, our sixth-grade students may return to school and all students will shift to our traditional schedule. Thus, on November 4, our school will officially begin at 7:47 am and end at 2:39 pm daily.

As we begin our second-quarter and prepare to support both our students participating in Rockwood at School and Rockwood at Home learning, I would like to provide you with the following important reminders:

    • Our RSMS Teachers will serve both our Rockwood at Home and Rockwood at School students within the same class. The first semester ends on Thursday, Jan. 14.
    • All courses in both programs will follow the same scope and sequence in the Rockwood curriculum and be taught by Rockwood teachers. Both our Rockwood at Home and Rockwood at School options will follow our school's bell schedule for courses.

    • For all information specific to the procedures we will use at Rockwood South, please view this important document.
As we head into our week of learning, please encourage your students to view our Talon Talk announcements for this week and our Mindful Monday video from our School Counselors. You will find our Mindful Monday video on our counselor's grade-level Canvas pages. In addition, you can find our www.FalconProud.com website on our counselor's grade-level Canvas pages to access after school activities sign-ups, our Talon Talk announcements, and more.

Building a strong community among all of our students is important to us. During this unique period of time, it is necessary for us to remember that regardless of each student's learning choice, we are all FALCONS. In addition, please remember that we are asking our teachers to work with our students differently than ever before. We must keep these things in mind and continue to communicate with one another, extend grace, and provide support. I have personally seen our community support and care for one another in the best and most difficult times. I have no doubt that we will continue to work together to make certain our kids thrive. I am immensely proud of our Falcon Family!

As always, please reach out to us if we can help in any way. I will be hosting an Optional Parent Information Night on Thursday, October 29 at 6:00 pm, via Zoom. You are welcome to use this link to join the session.

We appreciate your partnership and support. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850.

    FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2020

October 16, 2020 Permanent Link to Post

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

We have been working diligently on our gradual phase-in plan for a safe return to the classroom. The school district offers both a Rockwood at School option for parents who prefer in-person learning and a Rockwood at Home option for parents who prefer virtual learning for their children.

In-person learning for our students will begin soon! Sixth-grade students may return on Wednesday, Nov. 4 while our seventh- and eighth-grade students may return on Thursday, Nov. 5. The earlier return date for our sixth-grade students will allow for orientation activities as they transition to middle school.

I want to provide you with some information as you make the decision on the best program for your child. Please note the following:

    • At this time, parents are asked to make a selection between Rockwood at Home and Rockwood at School. Parents will receive an email with registration information today. The registration deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 21.

    • For the remainder of our first semester, students will remain in their regularly scheduled second-quarter classes. Teachers will serve both our Rockwood at Home and Rockwood at School students within the same class.

    • Please note: For the second semester, our Rockwood middle and high schools are working to make changes to the master schedule. These changes will allow the district to accommodate a separate "Virtual Academy" for our Rockwood at Home learners. At this time, we are working to finalize the structure of this new Virtual Academy, and we will send you more information as soon as it is available. We will also ask our secondary parents to make a choice for the second semester between the two educational formats at a later date. The second semester begins Tuesday, Jan. 19, and ends on Thursday, June 3.
For all information specific to the procedures we will use at Rockwood South, please view this important document. This document will provide you with answers to the following questions:

    • What will my child’s daily schedule look like?
    • How will teachers communicate with students and how should my child contact their teachers?
    • Will teachers take attendance?
    • What if my At Home child can’t login to a class because of illness or technology issues?
    • What if my child is isolated or quarantined during the 2nd quarter due to a positive Covid test?
    • Will At School students be required to wear a mask?
    • What supplies will my child need?
    • What other safety precautions will be in place at Rockwood South Middle School?
    • And much more!
I also want to make sure you have information on our Rockwood Safe Together practices and procedures for Health and Wellness in our school. We will be upholding our health and safety practices for the students and staff participating in on-campus education. The school environment will look different than it has in years past, and we are committed to keeping a safe environment for all.

For more information on being safe together in Rockwood, the Rockwood School District is hosting a Rockwood Safe Together virtual question-and-answer session for the entire district community with Dr. Jason Newland, Washington University professor of pediatrics, infectious diseases. The live webinar is open to all Rockwood students, families, staff members, and will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Community members interested in joining the event may register here.

On a different note, as we head into our week of learning, please encourage your students to view our Talon Talk announcements for this week and our Mindful Monday video from our School Counselors. You will find our Mindful Monday video on our counselor's grade-level Canvas pages. Remember, you can choose to have your child access this information over the weekend or during our scheduled Student Advisory Block from 8:00-8:45 a.m. on Monday mornings. In addition, you can find our www.FalconProud.com website on our counselor's grade-level Canvas pages to access after school activities sign-ups, our Talon Talk announcements, and more.

As always, please reach out to us if we can help in any way. I will be hosting an Optional Parent Information Night on Thursday, October 29 at 6:00 pm, via Zoom, so look for more information to come. Remember that we are all on the same team and want the very best for our students. I know this is a difficult decision for families to make. I have complete confidence in the strength of our Falcon Family and know we will work together to meet the needs of our students!

Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850.

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

Welcome to October! To kick off this month, we celebrated National Custodians Day on October 2nd. At RSMS, we are extremely fortunate to have such a hardworking and dedicated team of custodians! We sincerely appreciate our custodians for all they do for our school and community.

As we shared with yesterday, it's time to sign-up for our Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences. Parents may sign up for a conference slot with a teacher using this Conference Links Document. Once you access the document, simply look for your child's teachers and click on each of their names. This will take you to the teacher's Sign Up Genius where you will select the time for your conference. It is important to note, we will accept sign-ups for conferences until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6.   Please be sure to sign up prior to that time.

Each of your child's teachers will send a follow-up email by 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, sharing a Zoom link to the conference session to those parents who have made appointments.

Remember, due to our quarter schedule for classes, we will hold a second set of conferences on Thursday, November 19 from 3:30-7:00 p.m to allow parents to have the opportunity to talk with their child's second-quarter teachers. That being said, since Language Arts is a year-long course (unless your child's Language Arts class is CCLA), you can choose to meet with your child's Language Arts teacher at our conferences on November 19.

On another note, we are happy to share that all grades in Infinite Campus can be viewed accurately through the Parent Portal. The RSD Technology Department worked with the vendors of both Infinite Campus and Canvas to correct any miscommunication occurring between these programs.

Remember to encourage your students to view our Talon Talk announcements for this week and our Mindful Monday video from our School Counselors.

On another note, I would like to share an important letter with you from the Summit Athletic Director, Mitch Lefkowitz, regarding spectators at RSHS sporting events. Per St. Louis County Guidelines, students are not permitted to attend either the home or away sporting events unless they are a family member of one of the athletes. That being said, each athlete is only allowed to bring TWO family members. Please help our High School in following these guidelines as we do not want to jeopardize our athletes' participation in sporting events.

If there is anything we can do at this time to assist you or your child, please let us know.

We greatly appreciate your partnership and support! Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850.

    RSMS Parent-Teacher Conferences

October 2, 2020 Permanent Link to Post

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Families,

We invite you to participate in our Fall Virtual Parent-Teacher Conferences. As we shared with you last week, parents will have the opportunity to conference with their child(ren)’s teachers either through email exchange or via Zoom conferences. We will hold our conferences on the following dates and times:

    • Thursday, October 8 - 8:15-8:50 a.m.
    • Thursday, October 8 - 3:30-7:00 p.m.
    • Monday, October 12 - 7:30-8:45 a.m.
If a Zoom conference is the preferred method of communication, parents may sign up for a conference slot with a teacher using this Conference Links Document. Once you access the document, simply look for your child's teachers and click on each of their names. This will take you to the teacher's Sign Up Genius where you will select the time for your conference.

Each of your child's teachers will send a follow-up email by 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, sharing a Zoom link to the conference session to those parents who have made appointments. As a reminder, conference appointments will be brief, 7 minutes in length, in order to accommodate as many parents as possible while still allowing time for discussion. There is a limited number of slots available, so we ask parents to focus on courses where you have questions or concerns with your child’s progress when signing up for Zoom conferences and utilizing email as a means to check-in on courses for which you do not have questions or concerns. We ask that multiple parents for the same child do not sign up for separate appointments with an individual teacher.

If you are unable to secure a conference time with a teacher, please contact that teacher to make other arrangements. We will accept sign-ups for conferences until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6. Please be sure to sign up prior to that time.

*If your availability changes and you are no longer able to attend your conference appointments, please cancel your appointments through Sign Up Genius to free up those slots for another parent.

Again, you may use this link to sign up for conference appointments.

We appreciate all of your support and look forward to meeting with you for our virtual Fall Conferences. Please contact me if you have any questions.

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

We certainly had a beautiful weekend as we prepare to close out the month of September. Before looking ahead, I would like to share with you some amazing news from last week. Our very own, Assistant Principal Cassandra Suggs, received the prestigious Jewel Award from STL TV for her TV series, Educating Through a Pandemic! We are so proud, Cassandra. I greatly appreciated getting to participate in this series when Cassandra interviewed me last Spring. You are welcome to watch the recorded interview by clicking here.

With October right around the corner, it's already time for our Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences! We will hold our conferences on the following dates and times:

    • Thursday, October 8 from 8:15-8:50 a.m.
    • Thursday, October 8 from 3:30-7:00 p.m.
    • Monday, October 12th from 7:30-8:45 a.m.
This information will support you in preparing for the format and structure of our conferences:

    • We will use a virtual format for conferences (Zoom).
    • Parents will have an opportunity to sign up for 7-minute sessions to speak with each of their child's teachers. We will share this link with you on Thursday of this week.
    • Due to our quarter schedule for classes, we will hold a second set of conferences on Thursday, November 19 from 3:30-7:00 p.m to allow parents to have the opportunity to talk with their child's second-quarter teachers.
    • Please note that since Language Arts is a year-long course, you will only sign up for one conference slot on either the October or the November dates.
As we continue to progress through online learning, the RSD Technology Department recently notified us of an issue that is currently impacting our parents' ability to see the accurate grades for their student(s) in Infinite Campus. Due to an issue with the synchronization between Canvas and Infinite Campus, grades entered by teachers in Canvas are not being pushed into the Infinite Campus Gradebook via the automated process. The RSD Technology Department is working with both vendors to get this issue resolved as quickly as possible. Currently, you may check your student's grades through your Canvas Parent Observer account. If you do not have a Canvas Parent Observer account, you may create one by following these steps:

Remember to encourage your students to view our Talon Talk announcements for this week and our Mindful Monday video from our School Counselors. You will find our Mindful Monday video on our counselors' grade-level Canvas pages. Remember, you can choose to have your child access this information over the weekend or during our scheduled Student Advisory Block from 8:00-8:45 a.m. on Monday mornings. In addition, you can now find our www.FalconProud.com website on our counselors' grade-level Canvas pages! This site contains our Talon Talk announcements, after school activities sign-up access, and more.

Last but not least, we invite our students to participate in the Falcon Family Virtual Homecoming Spirit Week. The details for attire are pictured below this newsletter. Let's show our Falcon Pride!

If there is anything we can do at this time to assist you or your child, please let us know.

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

I hope you are able to take a moment to enjoy our beautiful September weather! We are certainly zooming into Fall (quite literally it seems!). Speaking of Zoom, please continue to encourage your student to turn their camera on during class sessions and to fully participate during class. If there is a reason that prevents your student from fully participating in class, don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher. We greatly appreciate your support!

As we head into our week of learning, remember to encourage your students to view our Talon Talk announcements for this week and our Mindful Monday video from our School Counselors. This week's Talon Talk will walk your student through signing up for our after school activities beginning this week. Also, watch to the very end if you would like to see the behind the scenes bloopers! As we shared with you last week, you will find our Mindful Monday video on our counselor's grade-level Canvas pages. Remember, you can choose to have your child access this information over the weekend or during our scheduled Student Advisory Block from 8:00-8:45 a.m. on Monday mornings.

In addition to information on Mindful Mondays, our students will also be able to find information and access to sign up for our virtual after school activities on our counselor's grade-level Canvas pages. Activities will begin on Tuesday, September 22nd at 2:30 p.m. We encourage our students and parents to check out our school activities website: www.FalconProud.com for upcoming news and more.

If there is anything we can do at this time to assist you or your child, please let us know.

We greatly appreciate your partnership and support! Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850.

    CHROMEBOOK TIPS AND STRATEGIES!

If a Chromebook is obviously broken (or lost), then per my e-mail earlier today, student or parent needs to submit ticket (per below) & take it to the Summit exchange/repair desk. (And not to bring charger, unless told to do so.)

If charger is lost or broken: for current 8th-Graders, there are some spare chargers at South front desk. For current 6th- and 7th-Graders, student will need to submit a ticket & go to Summit exchange site, & there's generally a $50 replacement charger fee (unless charger simply stops working despite no visible damage). Exchange desk will only accept check, or exactly $50 cash.

If a Chromebook won't start: to summarize e-mail I sent last week, student should plug it into a charger (making sure, by hand, that charger cord is firmly plugged into charger "brick"), then do "hard reset": hold down the "refresh key" then tap the power key to immediately restart/reboot the Chromebook.

If someone forgets or needs to change their password, they should go to this Web site...

    id.rsdmo.org

For a forgotten password, they'll need to click the "Need Help" link at id.rsdmo.org.

RSD passwords must contain 3 of the 4 categories of lowercase, uppercase, number, & symbol (!, @, #, etc.), can't include any part of the user's name, & must be different (even by just 1 character) from any RSD password they've used in the past year.

If password problem can't be fixed at id.rsdmo.org, then the user should call Help Desk at x31111, a.k.a. 636-733-1111.

If Chromebook is acting weird (e.g. Zoom is unreliable, Chromebook seems generally slow, etc.) but isn't obviously physically broken, student should please try the following...

    1) Enter the following in the Chrome address bar...

    chrome:settings/resetProfileSettings

    ...then click the "Reset" button.

    2) Do keyboard combination CTRL-SHIFT-BACKSPACE, click "Advanced," choose "Time Range" of "All Time," checkmark all the boxes, then click "Clear Data."

    3) Enter the following in address bar...

    chrome:help

...then click the blue "Chrome OS Settings" link, which should begin any avail. updates.

    4) When the Chrome update is done, or if there aren't updates available, do a "hard reset": hold down the "refresh key" then tap the power key which will restart/reboot the Chromebook immediately

Medical Marijuana - What Parents Need to Know

Since medical marijuana use became legal in Missouri State, you may have heard different opinions about whether it is safe to use. You may not be sure what Missouri's laws are, or how marijuana use can affect young people. When it comes to protecting your child's health, it's important to remember your power as a parent. By knowing the facts, starting conversations early, and using proven prevention strategies, you can help your child avoid using marijuana, alcohol, other drugs, and other risky behaviors.

    JUNIOR FALCON BASKETBALL-IMPORTANT MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Coaches of the Jr. Falcon Basketball Program,

With COVID-19 restrictions on youth sports at this moment in St. Louis County, we have decided to temporarily postpone the tryout/registration process for the winter season (also the Jr. Coaches Meeting for Wednesday 9th). Park/Rock has extended its deadline for registration as well. As we gather more information about re-opening of facilities for practices/games, we will reschedule our tryout/registration dates accordingly.

I am looking forward to a time when we can safely return to play with youth sports in St. Louis County, but unfortunately at this point, that time is not right now. As soon as a plan is in place for winter basketball season, we will pass that information along to you. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

Thank you for your continued support of the Jr. Falcon Basketball program. It is because of the parents, players and coaches who participate in this program that our high school program has experienced so much success recently.

Each session will be 15 minutes long with 2 minutes in between for parents to move to their next Zoom session. To access each session, please use this Virtual Curriculum Night Spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is organized by the last name of each teacher.

While the Zoom Sessions will be live, we will record the sessions to allow anyone who is unable to attend the event and opportunity to hear from their child's teachers. I will send these recorded sessions to you in our Weekly Newsletter this weekend. Remember, all parents will have the opportunity to ask our staff questions following our Curriculum Night by using our Curriculum Night Question Form. The form will close by the end of the day on Tuesday, September 15.

As a reminder, you can expect to learn the following at our Curriculum Night:

    • Information about each of your child's teachers.
    • Information about the specific course curriculum and the essentials of what you can expect your child to learn in the classroom.
    • Information about general classroom expectations (currently on-line learning expectations).
    • How to navigate the teacher's Canvas page.
    • Information about assignments and grading.
    • Information on how to best contact the teacher for support.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850. We look forward to "meeting" with you tonight!

TECHNOLOGY TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS FOR ROCKWOOD FAMILIES

An all-virtual start to the 2020-2021 school year brings its own set of challenges for Rockwood students, parents, teachers, and staff members.

Here are a few tips from the Rockwood Technology Department on helping solve some of the issues that have been brought to our attention.

How to Submit a Chromebook Ticket

    2019-2020 YEARBOOK PICK UP

2019-2020 yearbooks that were ordered are available now for pick-up Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. in the front office at Rockwood South. If you ordered a nameplate and/or autograph page insert, those are also available for pick-up.

If you have yet to pick up your copy, please be sure to stop by Rockwood South as soon as you can! If you cannot pick up your yearbook during these times, please contact the front office to make other arrangements.

LOOKING FOR A WAY TO HELP FAMILIES IN THE RSMS COMMUNITY THIS SCHOOL YEAR?

Please consider donating to the RSMS Pantry Fund and/or RSMS Scholarship Fund. Social Worker, Ashley O'Daniel, uses monetary donations to the RSMS Pantry to purchase food, toiletries, clothing items, and other various needs for our RSMS students and families. Monetary donations to the Scholarship fund helps support students with class fees, PE uniforms, and those who are unable to attend a field trip or school event due to financial constraints. Cash or check donations can be dropped off at the front office (attn: Ashley O'Daniel). Checks should be made out to RSMS.

Also, please keep an eye out for upcoming volunteer opportunities listed on the RSMS Pantry SignUp Genius pages. Here is the link to RSMS Pantry items needed page and the RSMS Pantry volunteers needed page. Items needed and volunteer opportunities will be added throughout the school year - so please make sure to look back throughout the school year!

    LIBRARY NEWS-LOOKING TO CHECK-OUT A BOOK?

Rockwood South's library will be offering curbside pickup for physical books for students. Please see attached flyer for details. For the first two weeks of school, pickup will be available Monday through Friday, 7:30 to 3:00. Weather permitting, the cart and return bin will be outside the front lobby. If the weather is questionable, the cart and bin will be inside.

Following the first two weeks of school, the hours for pickup will change to Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7:30 to 3:00.

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Miss Rankins via email and she will be happy to help in any way possible.

Curbside Pick Up Steps - How-To Video

    CHROMEBOOK TIPS AND STRATEGIES!

If a Chromebook is obviously broken (or lost), then per my e-mail earlier today, student or parent needs to submit ticket (per below) and take it to the Summit exchange/repair desk.

If someone forgets or needs to change their password, they should go to this website: ...

    id.rsdmo.org

    3) Enter the following in address bar: chrome:help

...then click the blue "Chrome OS Settings" link, which should begin any available updates.

    4) When the Chrome update is done, or if there aren't updates available, do a "hard reset": hold down the "refresh key" then tap the power key which will restart/reboot the Chromebook immediately

And of course, How to Submit a Chromebook Ticket.

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

Happy Sunday! We made it through week one of online learning and I have no doubt that with each passing day we will continue to improve our work together. I loved having the opportunity to pop into classes this week to see our kids in action. To be honest, seeing our kids brought tears to my eyes. We miss them so much and can't wait for the day when we are all together again! I greatly appreciate the hard work of our staff members in navigating challenges to support our kids and the patience of our community as we troubleshoot these challenges. I am extremely proud of our Falcon Family!

As we move into week two, I would like to provide you with the information your student will need for our Monday Morning Advisory sessions. For this week, we have recorded the sessions. As a result, your student can choose to watch the sessions today, using these links, or tomorrow morning during our official advisory time of 8:00-8:45 a.m. Please note that in the future, we may offer live advisory Zoom sessions during our advisory time. The links for this week are as follows:

    • Monday Morning Announcements--Talon Talk
    • RSMS Student Services Advisory Lesson 8/31/2020--Please see the link for a video clip with this Monday's Advisory Lesson. You'll hear from our Student Services team on how we can support students & families, as well as be able to participate in a breathing exercise called Box Breathing. We hope to have our canvas page up and running soon!
    • Mindful Monday District Video--please know that students must access this video through their Rockwood Email Address.
If you would like to see our advisory video from the first day of school, please click here. Our RSMS Welcome Back video is at the very start of the session.
Also this week, your child will participate in the STAR Enterprise Assessments in Reading and Mathematics on Monday, August 31st - Friday, September 4th. Communication will come Monday from your child's language arts teacher. Detailed information including video directions, example questions, and quick links is also provided on this website for STAR Testing Online. You can also view this letter from our district sharing more information.

On another note, as shared by the RSD Technology Department last week, Observer Accounts for parents are up and running. I would like to provide you with some helpful information for accessing your observer account.

Last but not least, a few helpful reminders:
    • Please have your students shutdown and restart their devices, each day. This will allow the device to update the settings and will improve performance. Remember to have your student completely shut-down and restart their computer--not simply log-off. If you are still having difficulty with the functionality of your Chromebook, please contact the Technology Help Desk: Technology Help Desk Link.
    • Please see the Daily schedule for all middle school students. Please click on the Middle School Tab once you click the link.
    • Attendance will be taken each day in all classes. If your child will be out for a specific reason, or has a technology issue, and can not participate in the live session(s), please call us at 636-891-6850.
    • If you were not able to come to RSMS last week for our Material Distribution Days you are welcome to come to school anytime between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to obtain needed items. Please note that masks will be required and all entrants must complete a Covid-19 Self Report Form prior to entering the building. If these times do not work for you, simply email or call me and I am happy to arrange a time that works for you!
    • Parents can complete a meal benefit application at any time throughout the school year to see if they qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Benefits last all school year. The sign-up sheet for the Grab N Go meals can be found here.
If there is anything we can do at this time to assist you or your child, please let us know.
I look forward to working with you and greatly appreciate your partnership. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850.

    CHROMEBOOK TIPS--REMINDER!

If a student's Chromebook won't start immediately, here's what they need to try (ASAP)...
    1) Unplug charger from Chromebook.
    2) Unplug charger from wall outlet.
    3) Ensure by hand that the charger's power cord is securely plugged into the black charger "brick." (Even the tech support guy can't tell this just by looking.)
    4) Close Chromebook lid.
    5) If wall outlet is controlled by a nearby light switch, ensure the switch is on, & verify that the outlet works with something simple, e.g. a lamp or alarm clock.
    6) Plug charger back into (verified working) wall outlet.
    7) Plug charger back into Chromebook, then leave Chromebook on charger for at least 2 hours.
    8) While Chromebook is still on charger, open Chromebook lid.
    9) If Chromebook doesn't start within 10 seconds, do a "hard reset," by holding down the "refresh key" then tapping the power key.
(Student should try a second "hard reset" if first one doesn't help, but there's no added benefit to trying more than two, i.e., the elevator doesn't arrive any faster by pushing the button a bunch of extra times.)
    10) If Chromebook still won't start, then student will need to send a tech ticket to techhelp@rsdmo.incidentIQ.com (with problem description in subject line and in message body), or to Web site https://rsdmo.incidentIQ.com, or if necessary, to call Help Desk at 636-733-1111.

    FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 2020

August 21, 2020 Permanent Link to Post

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

It is an exciting time, as your Rockwood South teachers are on campus and gearing up for our first day of online learning together! Although we are virtual this quarter, the excitement and fire for students to return and for our first day together still burns bright. While this year has presented us with its fair share of challenges to navigate, I am also looking forward to the opportunities that will be available to everyone.

As we look forward to starting our classes on August 24, I would be remiss if I did not mention that along with the excitement to be with our students, there will also be a certain amount of nervousness. I assure you that our staff is committed to learning and growing, but we will need your patience and grace as we strive to continually improve and get this right. I will be honest with you, we will not have all the answers right away because this is a new format and system for many, if not all of us. However, it is the love for kids, for teaching, for connecting and learning that will allow us to rise. I know we can count on our Falcon Family community to extend patience and grace as we work together to support our kids.

Listed below we have provided logistics and technical information we want to make sure you have to begin learning on August 24th.

    • Please watch this brief and important video to help you and your child in accessing and navigating the Canvas Learning System.
    • Accessing classes on the first day of school (this is also shown in the video above): When students open their browser on their Chromebook, Canvas will come up on the first tab; they will be automatically logged in and have access to their courses. Zoom links for each class will be located in the announcements and course resources for each course. Students will use that link to join that specific class during the scheduled time it meets.
    • Our first day of school will begin on Monday at 8:00 a.m. with our Back to School Advisory Session. All students will access this session through the Canvas Learning System. The link for the Welcome Back to School Advisory video will be in the announcements for your child's Language Arts Course.
    • Parents can find information about access to their student’s course work by visiting Canvas information online on the Rockwood website.
    • In preparation for the first day of school, we ask that all students please log onto their Chromebook prior to the first day of school and update their Chromebook (if needed). If a student is having difficulty with their Chromebook, please see the Chromebook Tips at the bottom of this newsletter. If you are still having difficulty, please contact the Technology Help Desk: Technology Help Desk Link.
    • Remember to set up a workspace for your student to participate in learning.
    • Please see the Daily schedule for all middle school students. Please click on the Middle School Tab once you click the link.
    • Starting August 24, 2020, attendance will be taken each day in all classes. If your child will be out for a specific reason, and you know they will not be in the live session(s), please call us at 636-891-6850.
    • Material Distribution Days will take place Monday, August 24 through Friday, August 28 in the lobby area at RSMS. CHROMEBOOK TIPS

    9) If Chromebook doesn't start within 10 seconds, do a "hard reset," by holding down the "refresh key" then tapping the power key .

    JUNIOR FALCON BASKETBALL MESSAGE

    Parents,

We wanted to give you some information about our Jr. Falcon Basketball program, with respect to the current challenges surrounding COVID-19. As of now, we are planning as if the winter season will happen. It is important to keep in mind that all of this may change. This email contains important dates that we encourage you to put on your calendar and we will try and update any changes, as time goes on.

The Jr. Falcon Basketball program is currently available to 4th through 8th graders. Even though the winter season seems a long time away, the paperwork needed to register teams is right around the corner. Thus, decisions need to be made on players, coaches, level of ability, etc. soon.

The evaluation and tryout process for players planning on playing during the winter session will be held in the Rockwood Summit main/lower gyms on:

Monday, Sept. 14th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm (6th grade only for tryouts)
Tuesday, Sept. 15th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm (7th grades only for tryouts)
Wednesday, Sept. 16th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm (8th grades only for tryouts)
    Sunday, Sept 20th from 1:00 – 3:00 pm (6th, 7th and 8th grades only for tryouts)
Sunday, Sept 20th from 3:00 – 4:00 pm (4th and 5th grades only for open gym time)

6th, 7th, and 8th-grade teams will be formed through a tryout process. There will be an A-team formed and the remaining players will be on a 2nd team or split between 2 teams. Again, this will depend on the number of players trying out and the number of parent-volunteer coaches willing to take on the role of coaching/assistant coaching teams.

***IMPORTANT*** Any person who is wanting to coach in the Jr. Falcon program this winter, head coach or assistant coach, there is a Coaches Meeting that will be held at Summit (in the flex room) on Wednesday, September 9th at 7:00 to discuss coaching topics for the winter and some of the evaluation process. If you would like to help in any capacity, please plan on attending that evening.

If you have any questions about the coaching meeting and/or evaluation process, please feel free to contact any of the Jr. Falcon Board Members:

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,
The one-week countdown has begun for our first day of school! We are very excited to see our kids and have missed them greatly. To prepare for our big day, please read the information below and complete all of the registration forms pictured within the link, online.

    Student Schedule Information

We are happy to share that student schedules will be ready for viewing tomorrow, Monday, August 17, after 9:00 a.m. Here a few reminders regarding schedules:

    • The Rockwood School District hires teachers and creates a master school schedule based on the courses that students sign up for in the spring.
    • RSMS Schedule Change Request Procedures can be viewedhere.
    • Requests were due by May 15, 2020.
    • Students will not necessarily have their electives in order of preference.
If you are considering a schedule change, the following are acceptable reasons to request a change:

    • The schedule is incomplete or is missing a class.
    • The schedule has an incorrect level class: challenge, grade-level, or IEP.
    • The schedule has an incorrect encore class (Please Note: Students do not get the courses in order of preference, just sometime throughout the year.)
    • If one of these three reasons applies, please fill out the RSMS Course Change Request Form from the student's Google account.
As a reminder, WEB Day will be online for all 6th-grade students rather than in-person.

    • We will host a WEB online event on Monday, August 17th for students with the last name beginning with A-L, and a second WEB online event on Tuesday, August 18th for students with the last name beginning with M-Z. Both events will begin at 9:00 a.m.
    • Parents and students received emails on Thursday, August 13 (Last names A-L) and on Friday, August 14 (Last names M-Z) for the Zoom link to attend the online event.
    • Contact alexanderkyle@rsdmo.org or komorekkayla@rsdmo.org with any questions.
I hope you enjoy the last few days of summer and please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850. I look forward to seeing you soon!

BEGINNING BAND MEETING AND INSTRUMENT DISPLAY-REMINDER!
We have an amazing band program at RSMS! To prepare for our year, the Band Department will hold our annual Beginning Band Parent Meeting and Instrument Display on Thursday, August 20th. In order to be able to provide the safest and socially distant rental procedure possible, we will split the meeting into two meetings.

Students with last names beginning with A-L will attend the rental display at 6:00 p.m. and those with the last names starting with the letters M-Z will attend a 7:00 meeting. The meeting will take place in the large gym so that we can allow for social distancing. All in attendance should follow RSD guidelines and wear a mask.

Families will be able to rent an instrument, purchase a band book and accessories, and receive information concerning band requirements and performance dates at the meeting. Vendors will also have required masks with a slit, flute guards, and bell covers required for safety.

Three companies: Nottelmann Music (314-631-1486), Music In Arts (314-968-5459), and Palen Music (636-229-1904) will have representatives there to answer your questions, rent the instrument, and supply the necessary accessories and the book needed for the class. If you cannot make the display, you may call and set up a rental over the phone. I believe they all have on-line renting as well. These companies offer affordable rental prices and will make sure you get the correct mouthpiece and accessories for your instrument. They also visit our school once a week to pick up any repairs and deliver ordered accessories so you will never have to spend time driving to the music store. If you are unable to rent an instrument, please email me at albrechtangela@rsdmo.org. I will make sure your child has an instrument to play.

** Please note: You may rent or purchase an instrument by check or major credit card!

    • Live interaction with teachers every day
    • Instruction and pacing to complete the entire curriculum
    • Time for students to work on their assignments both guided by the teacher and independently
    • A structure that is similar to the traditional school day
    • Developing the student/teacher relationship that is critical to learning, especially in this unique environment

RSMS Summer Newsletter - Friday, August 7, 2020

August 7, 2020 Permanent Link to Post

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Family,

Welcome to Rockwood South Middle School and the 2020-2021 school year! We certainly had an interesting summer filled with our fair share of uncertainty. Still, one thing that remains certain is the strength of our Falcon Family. I couldn't help but smile when I read the definition of "Family" above as it perfectly fits our community. I have personally seen our community support and care for one another in the best and most difficult times. I have no doubt that in our community we will continue to extend grace to one another, provide support, and work together to make certain our kids thrive. I am immensely proud of our Falcon Family!

Although our school year will begin differently with 100% of our students engaged in online learning, our mission will remain the same. We will continuously strive to learn and discover, connect as a community, and make a positive difference for our kids and one another. We will continue to build strong relationships with our students and go above and beyond to meet their needs. We will remain Falcon Proud!

As we begin our school year, the question, "Remember when...?" has really resonated with me. Years from now, we will look back on this time and say, "Remember when...?" with thoughts of the 20-21 school year. I often wonder, how will each of us fill in the ellipsis within this sentence? The most powerful part is that we can choose what this will look like through our actions TODAY. I know that I speak on the behalf of our entire RSMS Staff when I share that we will be able to say, "Remember when we developed all of these fantastic new ways to connect and support our kids and families?" "Remember when we had such grace and forgiveness for one another that we seamlessly worked together to support every student?" "Remember when our Falcon Community became the community with the greatest bond and deepest commitment to our kids?" Each of us has the power and responsibility to make that future statement our reality. "Remember when...?" begins now.

In the coming weeks, we will share more with you regarding the details of our online learning structure. In the meantime, please take note of this important information:

Orientation: Orientation will not be held this school year. Instead, we are offering “Picture Day” on the dates and times below. Please plan to attend during your designated time based upon the first letter of your last name. If you are in need of transportation, please contact Pam Eisenrich at (636)891-6873. We will have a make-up date later in the school year if you are unable to attend. We will also distribute yearbooks from the 19-20 school year to students who purchased a yearbook last school year. Last but not least, 6th-grade students who have not yet picked up their new Chromebook can do so at this time!

    • Wednesday, August 12, 2020, for 6th-grade

    • Thursday, August 13, 2020, for 7th-grade

    • Friday, August 14, 2020, for 8th-grade

    • Orientation Times by alphabet:

    1:00 – 2:00 A-D

    2:00 – 3:00 E – I

    3:00 – 4:00 J – N

    4:00 – 5:00 O – R

    5:00 – 6:00 S – T

    6:00 – 7:00 U - Z

WEB Day for 6th-grade: WEB Day will be online for all 6th-grade students rather than in-person. We will send more details regarding our online WEB experience in the days to come.

Beginning Band Meeting and Instrument Display: We will host this event as planned. Please see the details below if you are a band student.

Student Schedules: As a reminder, student schedules will be ready after August 20th.

I am incredibly thankful to be a part of our Falcon Family. I look forward to meeting our new families and to working with each of you to discover, connect, and make a difference. The power of our partnership is essential for the support, growth, and learning of our children. And of course, we will get through whatever comes our way this year, because we're FAMILY.

I hope you enjoy the last few days of summer and please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850. This is going to be the best year yet!

    • Students will not be asked to dress out for PE at this time but should dress appropriately for their day for physical activity (ex. athletic shoes).

    • Students will need to use their backpacks throughout the day.

    • Students will need to keep their phone OFF and in the backpack all day.

    • Water fountains will be closed for use. Water bottle filling stations will be available.

    • Hand sanitizer will be available in each classroom.

    • Students will assist in sanitizing their work area prior to leaving class.

Students will be expected to attend ZOOM meetings on Mondays for each of the classes they will be taking while in the building. Attendance will be taken in each class.

    At-Home Learning Days: A-L (Wed/Fri) M-Z (Tue/Thur)

Students will be expected to continue their learning independently on these two days. Students may be able to email their teachers or communicate through CANVAS. Teachers will not be available for online meetings as they will be teaching in-person classes Tuesday through Friday.

    Rockwood Online Option

Families that choose to receive their education online will be enrolled in Rockwood Online coursework. Rockwood Online differs significantly from the Alternative Learning Plan (ALP) that was adopted in March 2020 as a result of emergency school closures.

Rockwood Online strives to offer high-quality educational opportunities to students in all corners of the district.

Rockwood Online programming includes a focus on the following:

    • Regular teacher interaction with your child including direct instruction, small-group facilitation, individual conferencing, and intervention support.

    • Activities that engage and support interaction with materials both on and offline in a flexible environment.

    • Clear, consistent course navigation and organization of learning materials that encourage student independence.

    • Assessment that encourages research and original thinking.

    • Grading practices that are consistent with those of the seated classroom.

    • Class sizes consistent with those of the seated classroom because the teacher expectations for student feedback and communication are equivalent.

    • Academic timelines aligned to those of seated courses for quarter start and end dates, grading and reporting, and course completion.

In preparation for our school year, you can access our school supply list with this link. In the week's to come, we will share more information with you regarding our 6th-grade WEB experience and building tours for new students.

As a school leader and a parent, I know this is a difficult decision to make. We are in this together and we will get through it together. That is what family does and I have complete confidence in the strength of our Falcon Family!

We appreciate your flexibility during this unpredictable time and are immensely grateful for your support. No matter what we encounter in 20-21, this will be the best year yet! As always, you are welcome to reach out to me with any questions or thoughts. I look forward to seeing you very soon!

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

    Dear Falcon Families,

I hope you are having a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! Last week, we concluded the 2019-2020 school year by honoring our 8th-grade students with our "Last Drive Parade". Thank you to the many families and staff who participated in this celebration. It was great to see everyone!

As we begin our week and close-out our school year, I would like to provide you with the following reminders about our locker clean-out schedule. Students have an opportunity to obtain their belongings from school and to return any textbooks or library books to the school during this time. The schedule for entering the school will be as follows:

    • Tuesday, May 26: Students with last names starting with A-D from 9:00-11:30 a.m.; last names starting with E-H from 12:00-2:30 p.m.
    • Wednesday, May 27: Students with last names starting with I-M from 9:00-11:30 a.m.; last names starting with N-Q from 12:00-2:30 p.m.
    • Thursday, May 28: Students with last names starting with R-U from 9:00-11:30 a.m.; last names starting with V-Z from 12:00-2:30 p.m.
If you are unable to come to school at your scheduled time, please contact Kathy Clote for an appointment during the week of June 1st.

While at school, students will return all textbooks/library books, and our 8th-grade students will return their Chrome Books and chargers at this time and will receive their new Chrome Books and chargers. Students will place all textbooks outside of the appropriate teachers' classrooms. We will have a box outside of the library for you to return all library books. Some teachers have work to return to students; this can be found outside of the classrooms. All art projects can be found in the cafeteria. For 8th-grade students, we will have a table set up in our cafeteria for the return of Chrome Books.

We will permit one parent to enter the school with their student(s). As Dr. Miles shared in his email to the RSD Community, please follow the below safety guidelines:

    • You should not enter the building if within the past 14 days you have experienced any symptoms of COVID-19 including a fever (100.4 degrees or higher), a sense of having a fever, a cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, or new muscle aches.
    • You should not enter the building, if within the past 14 days you have had close contact with an individual that has a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19, or demonstrated any of the symptoms listed above.
    • Students and parents are not required to come to their schools to obtain personal belongings.
    • If students and parents choose not to enter school buildings to obtain personal belongings, you should contact administrators at your school to organize a time for later pick-up.
    • We recommend wearing face coverings.
    • Maintain at least six (6) feet between you and others.
    • Wash your hands often and disinfect frequently touched items.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
In addition to these safety guidelines, please remember the following when coming to RSMS for your locker clean-out:

    • Only two custodians will be available during the locker clean out days, so please remember to bring your locker combination with you.
    • Please wipe your returned textbooks with a disinfectant wipe.
    • Please return and stack your textbook next to your teachers’ classroom door.
    • Extra trash cans will be available in the hallways.
    • Bathrooms will be locked.
Please note that students will receive their yearbooks at registration for the 20-21 school year. We are hoping to provide 8th-grade students with their yearbooks this summer at an appreciation event, depending on safety guidelines.

Thank you, again, for the flexibility and grace that you have extended to us during this time of uncertainty. We are immensely grateful for your partnership and support. I have enjoyed learning with you and serving our community. I look forward to an even better 2020-2021 school year!

Have a safe and relaxing summer!

    RSMS Update for 8th-Grade Families

May 20, 2020 Permanent Link to Post

    A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

Good Evening Eighth Grade Falcon Families,

Can you believe that tomorrow will be your student's final day of Middle School? It seems like it was just yesterday that the class of 2024 was just entering our school as 6th-grade students. They have grown up so much in the past three years! I am so proud of the leaders they have become and I will miss them greatly.

As we prepare to say good-bye and wish the class of 2024 well, I would like to remind you to participate in our 8th-grade Last Drive Parade, tomorrow, starting at 3:00 p.m. Rockwood South staff members will line up throughout our parking lot to say good-bye to our 8th-grade students. You are welcome to bring one car per family. Please feel free to decorate your car if you wish!

I have included a picture of the parade route below this letter. You will find that it is very simple:

    • Enter from Hawkins road on the Kellison Elementary side and make a right.
    • You will follow our main driveway to the parking lot, travel around the exterior of the upper parking lot, and back down the main driveway.
    • All cars will need to make a RIGHT ON HAWKINS to exit our school grounds.
I would also like to remind you to attend our locker-clean out at your designated time next week. At this time, your student will turn in their Chromebook and charger and will receive their NEW Chromebook and charger for high school at this time. This Chromebook may also be used by students for summer courses.

As I shared with you last week, the RSMS staff will be looking for another opportunity to celebrate with our 8th-grade students this summer if we are permitted to safely do so. At that time, we will be giving out 4.0 awards and promotion certificates to students as we have in past years. Unfortunately, we will not be able to hold our traditional 8th-grade Dance. I am very sorry our students had to miss this tradition due to COVID-19. In the meantime, we are greatly looking forward to seeing you in the parade at RSMS on May 21st!

We appreciate all of your support! Please contact me if you have any questions.
