Rockwood South Middle School Helping Hands Committee
Who we are
The RSMS Helping Hands Committee was established to help Social Worker, Ashley O'Daniel, assist families who are faced with unexpected financial difficulties throughout the school year. Some programs that we assist with are the RSMS Pantry, RSMS Scholarship program, clothing needs, and household items.
“The community's response to helping others within their own community has been truly amazing!” Ashley O’Daniel, School Social Worker
In 2016, School Social Worker, Ashley O'Daniel, was distributing bags from Rockwood's Got Your Backpack program and quickly realized not all families' needs are the same. She decided to start her own pantry program at RSMS that would allow families to preference their individual needs. However, Ashley realized she would need help stocking a pantry at the school, so she sent out a request to the community for help and the RSMS PSO soon stepped in to help facilitate the process. Due to the overwhelming support and success, the RSMS Pantry is also able to assist other schools in the Fenton Quadrant (Rockwood Summit High School, Rockwood South Middle School, Kellison Elementary, Bowles Elementary, Stanton Elementary, and Uthoff Valley Elementary) should specific needs pop up that Rockwood's Got Your Backpack program is unable to meet such as toiletries and feminine hygiene products.
In 2019, a district wide program, Rockwood Gives Back Giving Place, was created to help families across the district with things such as utility bills, clothing, and medical needs. We are really excited about this additional resource!
The Helping Hands Scholarship Fund covers requests for assistance with field trips such as 6th grade camp and 8th grade Civil War Day. More than $1,000 in scholarships are given each year. RSMS Financial Assistance Request Form 2020-2021
How to Give Back
Pack a Bag
Each week, our students and/or families in need receive a bag filled with non-perishable food, toiletries and sometimes fresh fruits and vegetables that are easy to prepare, and can accommodate a variety of living circumstances. We need assistance in organizing, dividing and filling backpacks.
We have an ongoing updated list of needs for the pantry online. Just sign up for an item and drop off at the RSMS office. See the list here.
To save time, you can also shop from the wish list when shopping on Amazon and the items will be shipped directly to the school. See the wish list here.
We are also accepting donations for the scholarship fund through our Square account. Check with your employer to see if they will match your gift! Donate money here.
