English as a Second Language

  • We offer classes for adults whose first language is not English. Students in beginning classes learn to speak, listen to understand, read, and write English. Intermediate and advanced students have the opportunity to improve conversation, grammar, pronunciation, reading, and writing.

    Spring classes begin January 4th and continue through May 25th.  However, new students can begin class every week through mid April.  Most classes are in-person, but there are limited virtual classes for higher level students.  The last day to register for spring classes is April 5th for evening classes and April 19th for day classes. Students must be tested prior to beginning class.  Once our office receives your application, a staff member will contact you regarding signing up for testing.  Testing is available at various locations throughout St. Louis County and will take two days to complete.

    New Classes for English as a Second Language Students Starting in September! 

    In addition to our regular classes, the Parkway-Rockwood AEL program will be offering additional classes.  To participate, all students must also attend one of our regular listed classes.  See below for a description of each class.

    College Readiness:

    Thinking about college but not sure you’re ready?  Our college readiness class can help you prepare.  In this class, you’ll receive instruction in advanced vocabulary and how to write effective essays.  Preparation and practice for the TOEFL exam is also included.   You will also learn about filling out college applications, understanding your college options and how to find loans and schlolarships.

    Thursdays:  6 - 9 pm

    Career Readiness:

    This class focuses on teaching you the vocabulary and speaking skills you need for your current job and for your future job goals.  Students will be surveyed at the start of the class about their current jobs and future employment interests to ensure the class is relevant to each student’s situation.  The class will also practice searching for jobs, interviewing and how to fill out applications.

    Citizenship:

    Is the next step on your journey U.S citizenship?  We can help you prepare.  In our citizenship class, students will practice possible 'opening/ ice-breaking' conversations, which may occur at the beginning of the Citizenship Interview.  You will learn to understand and answer questions regarding personal information from the N-400 application. The History and civics materials needed to pass the interview will be practiced.  You will  learn about the Oath of Allegiance, be able to explain its significance and learn to repeat it confidently at your Swearing-in Ceremony.

    Conversation:

    This daily class is a great opportunity to practice English conversation and to make new friends from all over the world.  You will have in-depth discussions about current world events.  Students will also participate in friendly debate about interesting and thought-provoking topics.
