SEASONAL MOOD CHANGES: SAD

A form of depression that follows a seasonal pattern, Seasonal Affective Disorder appears and disappears at the same time each year. It's sometimes easy for parents to overlook symptoms of SAD, or dismiss them as normal mood swings. Aside from feeling sad or depressed, your child may be irritable, feel tired, have difficulty concentrating, experience changes in school performance, or have decreased interest in things they usually enjoy. Read more for information on prevention and treatment.

Low-Risk Symptoms

  • Fever >100.0F
  • Congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Muscle/body aches
  • Tiredness (fatigue)

High-Risk Symptoms

*If you give your child ibuprofen, Tylenol, or cough medicine in the morning to help them with symptoms then they are too sick for school. Please keep them home and call their health care provider for guidance.

We must work as a community to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our school. COVID-19 has many of the same symptoms as environmental allergies, influenza, and other viruses. COVID is undistinguishable without testing; please do not assume symptoms are caused by another condition. It is important that everyone stay vigilant and cautious to keep our school community safe and healthy. A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

Dear Falcon Family,

I hope you had a wonderful weekend. Last week, we enjoyed inducting our new National Junior Honor Society Members into the Rockwood South NJHS Chapter. Our Student Council also did an amazing job of celebrating our Veterans during our Veteran's Day Breakfast. As we continue to surge through the month of November, we have much to look forward to for this week! We will kick off our week with a B-Day on Monday.

This week we will also have the following events:

  • For 7th-grade parents, please read this important letter about the CHADS Coalition working with our students during our Health and PE Classes. The CHADS Coalition will be at RSMS in Mr. Jackson's classes on November 15 and 16.
  • For 8th-grade parents, we would like to remind you that our Health and PE classes will have a guest speaker on November 15 and 16 as part of their health and wellness unit. Please read this important letter for more information. This letter was provided to all parents by our 8th-grade PE teachers via email, the first week of November.
  • We will have a band concert on November 16, starting at 7:00 p.m. at RSHS. Remember, ALL GUESTS MUST WEAR A MASK TO ATTEND.
  • The National Junior Honor Society will sell hot chocolate on the mornings of November 17, 18, and 19 in the RSMS Lobby. Students can purchase a cup for $1 during homeroom. The proceeds will benefit St. Louis Children's Hospital.
  • Join us for our Fall Play "Horror Hike Whodunnit” starting at 7:00 p.m. on November 17, 18, and 19. Tickets on Sale Now! ALL GUESTS MUST WEAR A MASK TO ATTEND.
  • Looking for a way to support Falcon Families in Need this Holiday Season? See the Student Services Section below for how you can support our families through our annual RSMS Holiday Assistance program.
  • Please also see below for Pediatric Vaccination Information pertaining to the Rockwood School District, below this letter.

Last week, we celebrated our Students of the Week. Our winners from last week include:

  • Nanette Kue-nominated by Ms. Forgerson

  • Alex Beck-nominated by Ms. Engle

  • Mariana Julius-nominated by Ms. Sebelski

  • Ryley Brown-nominated by Ms. Yoss

  • Olivia Hirata-nominated by Ms. Forgerson

We greatly appreciate the excellent character and leadership these students exhibit within our school!

Please note that we will not have a newsletter next weekend since we will have a two-day school week. We will send out our next newsletter following Thanksgiving! On another note, as the temperature outside continues to get colder, it is important to remember our hours of operation. Core Building Hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Our scheduled staff supervision of students begins at 7:00 a.m. Thus, for student safety and supervision, doors open to walkers and parent drop-offs at 7:00 a.m. Bus riders are released from buses to come into the building at 7:15 a.m.

We appreciate all of your support. As always, please contact me if you have any questions. Let's have a great week!

RSD PEDIATRIC VACCINATION INFORMATION

As part of our Rockwood Safe Together mitigation efforts, we have been encouraging all staff members and eligible students to get vaccinated to keep students and staff healthy and in school. Now that all Rockwood students are eligible to receive the vaccine, we are requesting that parents voluntarily disclose* when their child has been fully vaccinated. This is strictly voluntary, but it will save everyone valuable time in contact tracing. As a reminder, those who are fully vaccinated are not subject to quarantine if they are determined to be a close contact with a positive case, as long as they are not exhibiting any COVID-19 symptoms. Providing your child’s vaccine information will also help us have a measure of vaccination rates within our school community and guide how Rockwood might adjust our policies to promote a safe learning and working environment.

This information is secure and will be accessible only by contact tracers with a need to know. Again, this is strictly voluntary! Even if you have already submitted this information to your school nurse in conjunction with contact tracing, we ask that you upload it via this new form so we have all the information in one place.

*Please note: Rockwood is utilizing a new form provider, and we have information posted on our website about how to log in the first time.

  • Please see the PSO newsletter here!
  • Want to nominate a student for a Renaissance Award? Our PSO has a category for parent/guardian-student nominations! Simply use this link for nominations https://forms.gle/WMtsdM3yJyYrP4VNA. The explanation of each award, example, and scoring criteria are all available on the form.
  • We Need You! We have several committees that would love to have your help this year. Book Fairs, RSMS Food Pantry, 6th-grade events, 8th-grade events, and more!

Check out the opportunities and let us know if you can help!

Attention Rockwood Parents:

You can view the film DON'T WAIT for free now through November 28.

Addiction is Real's award-winning substance use prevention film, DON’T WAIT, was created to provide you with the knowledge and empowerment you need to immediately start implementing drug prevention in your home. Parents can’t afford to ignore the pressures their children face to try drugs and alcohol. From
school hallways to social media to pop culture, your child lives in a world that encourages substance use.

Through interviews with parents, drug prevention experts, and one brave mother sharing her son’s story, DON’T WAIT offers you insights on:

  • Why it’s essential to talk to your kids early and often about the dangers of drugs and alcohol
  • How to best approach these conversations based on your child’s age
  • How and why 90% of addiction develops during the teenage years
  • Proactive measures you can take to prepare and protect your children from addiction
  • What to do if you spot signs of drug and alcohol use in your child
We appreciate that there are many important things you could do with your time. We promise that our 52-minute film will be worth your time and attention. Now, more than ever, it is critical that parents/caregivers understand how to care for their children’s mental health, as well as recognize signs of risky behavior.

HELPING HANDS NEEDS YOU!

Although the RSMS Stock the Pantry event was a huge success, we continue to have requests from families for our services. And since we always have such great support from the community, we thought we would ask again for your help!

1. Water Bottles - We are in search of new plastic reusable water bottles to be used at school.

2. Services - We are currently in search of services such as auto repairs, dental work, haircuts, and legal counsel that can be donated to families.

3. Monetary Donations - money donated to this fund go directly to families in the program to help with medical needs (such as glasses), medication costs, gas cards for a parent to get to work, pet food, clothing, etc. Donate directly here.

4. Food Donations - we have an Amazon Wish List to make it easy to purchase and ship directly to the school!

If you can help with one of the above, or have questions, please contact school Social Worker Ashley O' Daniel.

Last but not least, we would like to give a HUGE shout-out to Team Sam Personal Training Studio who raised $1200 for our Helping Hands at their open house this weekend! Thank you for supporting our families!

We had a great week at Rockwood South! I know our students are enjoying an opportunity to sharpen the saw over this extended weekend. Remember, our students will return to school on Wednesday, November 3rd for B-Day classes.

We appreciate all of our parents who joined us for our virtual parent-teacher conferences last week. Remember that even though our conferences are finished, the vital communication between parents and teachers must continue. Please reach out to our teachers with your questions to best support your student. Your partnership is critical to the success and well-being of our kids!

In addition to our conferences, we also celebrated our students who demonstrated academic achievement during the first quarter of school, with our Renaissance "Movie Nights". We plan to have our next school-wide celebration in January! Remember, students will achieve the school-wide incentive by meeting the following criteria:

  • Gold - Students achieve all A’s in every subject
  • Silver - Students achieve all A’s and B’s in every subject
  • Bronze - Students achieve all A’s and B’s in every subject with an exception of ONE C
  • Most Improved - Raise GPA by .5% from the last grading cycle. No F’s

What can you do to support your student?

Encourage your student to be proactive! Take some time each weekend to sit down with your student to look at their Infinite Campus. Plan out time for your student to make up missing/incomplete assignments and support them in communicating with their teachers.

What will we do to support your student?

Our staff will continue to review our students' assignments to provide valuable feedback and to design lessons that best support the learning needs of our students. Our staff members also support our students in continuing the learning process of essential skills and concepts through assessment re-takes and additional help before school and after school.

Also, remember that our parents have the opportunity to nominate students for the Discover, Connect, and Make a Difference Awards! Each quarter, the PSO awards one Discover winner, one Connect winner, and one Make a Difference winner from these nominations.

For an explanation of each award or to nominate a student, visit the form at

https://forms.gle/WMtsdM3yJyYrP4VNA. The deadline to nominate a student for the PSO-nominated awards will be Tuesday, Nov. 23. The PSO will deliberate, select, and announce one winner for each category before Winter Break.

We greatly appreciate the excellent character and leadership these students exhibit within our school!

Last but not least, as we head into November, we look forward to celebrating our Veterans at our Veteran's Day Breakfast. Breakfast will be served on Thursday, November 11th from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the RSMS cafeteria. Please see the picture below for more details and complete this form to attend.

We appreciate all of your support. As always, please contact me if you have any questions. Have a wonderful weekend!

To view the film:

2.) Click on “Rent $10.00”
3.) You will be asked to log in or to create a Vimeo account by entering your name, email, and password.

NEWS FROM OUR SCHOOL NURSE

When is too sick for school during the pandemic?

If your child has ANY (even one symptom) of the following, they are too sick for school. Please remember to check your child every morning before coming to school.

Low-Risk Symptoms

  • Fever >100.0F
  • Congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Muscle/body aches
  • Tiredness (fatigue)

High-Risk Symptoms

  • Cough
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Loss of Taste or Smell

*If you give your child ibuprofen, Tylenol, or cough medicine in the morning to help them with symptoms then they are too sick for school. Please keep them home and call their health care provider for guidance.

We must work as a community to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our school. COVID-19 has many of the same symptoms as environmental allergies, influenza, and other viruses. COVID is undistinguishable without testing; please do not assume symptoms are caused by another condition. It is important that everyone stay vigilant and cautious to keep our school community safe and healthy. Rockwood does NOT accept home COVID tests. Your child must go to a health care provider to get tested for COVID.

We are doing our best to follow the guidance provided by Rockwood, St Louis County Health Department, and the CDC to keep our students and staff members safe, but we need assistance for our families to succeed. Please take a few minutes to review the guidance on our website.

A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

Dear Falcon Family,

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend. It's hard to believe we are heading into our final week of October and the beginning of our second quarter of school. Whew! With the new quarter starting on Monday, remember that our sixth-grade students will begin new encore classes (with the exception of all music classes). Please remind your student to ask any staff member for help if they need support with their schedule or locating their new encore class.

On another note, we appreciate all of you who joined us for our in-person Parent-Teacher Conferences last week and look forward to our virtual conferences this week. Please see below for the information you need for this week, for our conferences, and more!

Parent-Teacher Conferences

  • We will hold conferences virtually on Thursday, October 28, from 3:30-7:00 p.m. Conference appointments will be brief, 7 minutes in length, in order to accommodate as many parents as possible while still allowing time for discussion.
  • You may sign up for a conference slot with a teacher using this Conference Links Document. Once you access the document, simply look for your child's teachers and click on each of their names. This will take you to the teacher's Sign Up Genius where you will select the time for your conference.
  • Your child's teachers will send you a follow-up email by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 27, sharing a Zoom link to the conference session.
  • We will accept sign-ups for virtual conferences until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 26. Please be sure to sign up prior to that time.

Rockwood Heartbeat Survey--We need YOUR feedback!

The Rockwood Heartbeat check-in is an ongoing process to solicit feedback to meet the needs of all members of our school community. These checkpoints will be used to support re-entry transitions as we identify and respond to the needs of our students, staff, and families.

As part of these activities, students and parents will be asked to complete an online questionnaire (3-5 questions) that encourages them to reflect on their own mindsets and approaches to learning (view questions).

You will also find a Parent Guide to taking the middle school heartbeat survey that may answer some of your questions.

Please take a few minutes to complete the survey, as your feedback and thoughts are very helpful to us!

State Testing Individual Results

The Rockwood Assessment Department will use electronic distribution methods to share MAP and EOC Individual Student Reports with parents. We will begin sending reports home in the morning at 10:00 am on October 27, via email. Please take note of the following:

  • Parents will receive a separate email for each child and MAP assessment (ELA, Math, and science).

  • Students participating in an EOC (Alg 1, Alg 2, Geometry) will receive a separate email with EOC results.

  • Remember, these individual student reports are from April/May 2021, and may not be reflective of the academic progress your child has made since testing in April.

Red Ribbon Week!

We invite all staff and students to join us in participating in our RED RIBBON SPIRIT WEEK fun! Please use this Tic-Tac-Toe document for all the information your student needs to participate! • Students will only go to the cafeteria to purchase breakfast and to eat. Students who are not purchasing breakfast will go directly to homeroom.

  • Students will go directly to their homeroom after eating breakfast.

We appreciate all of your support and look forward to an amazing second quarter of school. As always, please contact me if you have any questions. Let's have a great week!

Rockwood Equity Parent Advisory Council (REPAC)

The Rockwood School District is seeking parents interested in serving on a diversity, equity, and inclusion advisory council through the Office of Educational Equity and Diversity. The Rockwood Equity Parent Advisory Council (REPAC) will ensure the Rockwood School District stays on course with the universal equity, opportunity, and access goals outlined in The Way Forward, the Rockwood strategic plan. REPAC will promote, support, and inform the school community of DEI resources, initiatives, and opportunities. Please use this link to complete the interest form. REPAC information can be found on the RSD website using this link.

This Week-SEL Survey

This week we will issue the Rockwood Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Survey. Social and emotional learning is an important part of the educational experience. Over the next week, students will be asked to complete an online questionnaire that encourages them to reflect on their own mindsets, experiences, and approaches with learning. These questions help us to check in with our students to ensure they feel connected to our school and we are meeting their social-emotional needs. We encourage you to review the Parent Information flyer (Attached and linked) for the survey.

The information that is collected in the questionnaire will be shared with our school and your child's teachers to guide the work that we do as a school and district (will not be used as part of their grade or academic record). For a complete list of questions, please visit the Rockwood School District website.

The survey is voluntary and students can feel free to skip any question or choose not to complete the survey. If you do not want your child to attend complete the survey, please notify your child's administrator or counselor.

A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

Dear Falcon Family,

We had an exciting week at Rockwood South! On Friday, we had the honor of welcoming the CEO of Shape America, Stephanie Morris, to our school. Ms. Morris visited our 7th-grade Physical Education Classes and even participated in a workout with our kids as part of her Health Moves Minds tour. You can view many pictures of her visit on our school Twitter Hashtag, #RSMSrocks.

We also celebrated our Students of the Week. This week's winners were:

Elli Bayer - nominated by Mrs. Krueger

Zoey Zweifel - nominated by Mrs. Spiezio

Brenna Williams - nominated by Mrs. Spiezio

Megan Moran - nominated by Mrs. Allinder

Charlotte McIntosh - nominated by Ms. Grebas

We greatly appreciate the excellent character and leadership these students exhibit within our school!

On another note, it's time to sign up for our Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences. As we shared with you last week, we will hold conferences in person on Wednesday, October 20, from 3:30-7:00 p.m. and then virtually on Thursday, October 28, from 3:30-7:00 p.m. You may sign up for a conference slot with a teacher using this Conference Links Document. Once you access the document, simply look for your child's teachers and click on each of their names. This will take you to the teacher's Sign Up Genius where you will select the time for your conference.

If you sign-up for a virtual conference on Thursday, October 28, your child's teachers will send you a follow-up email by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 27, sharing a Zoom link to the conference session. As a reminder, conference appointments will be brief, 7 minutes in length, in order to accommodate as many parents as possible while still allowing time for discussion.

There are a limited number of slots available, so we ask you to focus on courses where you have questions or concerns with your child’s progress when signing up for conferences and utilizing email as a means to check in on courses for which you do not have questions or concerns. We ask that multiple parents for the same child do not sign up for separate appointments with an individual teacher.

If you are unable to secure a conference time with a teacher, please contact that teacher to make other arrangements. We will accept sign-ups for in-person conferences until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 19, and for virtual conferences until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 26. Please be sure to sign up prior to that time.

*If your availability changes and you are no longer able to attend your conference appointments, please cancel your appointments through Sign Up Genius to free up those slots for another parent.

Again, you may use this link to sign up for conference appointments.

For those who choose to sign-up for our in-person conferences on October 20, we are happy to announce the return of the Hidden in Plain View workshop from Addiction is Real, Inc. This event will include a 45-minute drug prevention presentation for parents/caregivers. Additionally, parents will be able to view the Hidden in Plain View exhibit, a teen bedroom exhibit that parents can explore to learn to recognize signs of risky behavior. Simply visit our cafeteria during conferences to participate.

Last but not least, as we begin this week on an A-Day, we will also begin offering Rush Bowls in the cafeteria every Monday starting on October 11. Rush Bowls will be available for purchase during lunch as an ala carte item, for $2.80.

We appreciate all of your support and look forward to meeting with you at our Fall Conferences. As always, please contact me if you have any questions. Let's have a great week!

A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

Dear Falcon Family,

It's hard to believe we have entered the month of October and are quickly approaching the end of our first quarter of school. Before you know it, Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences will be here as well. This year, we will hold conferences in person on Wednesday, October 20, from 3:30-7:00 p.m. and then virtually on Thursday, October 28, from 3:30-7:00 p.m. We will share information in our next newsletter regarding how to sign up for conferences.

In the meantime, we have much to celebrate as we closed out the month of September. Last week our Renaissance Team reported that they received 175 nominations for our September Discover, Connect and Make a Difference Awards. WOW! We will be announcing the student and staff winners for each award next week. All winners will receive prizes, and they will have their nominations showcased on the brag board within our school.

We also celebrated our Students of the Week. This week's winners were:

Zyere Fisher nominated by Mrs. Frisch

Eva Bausch nominated by Ms. Simon

Lila Kemp nominate by Ms. Forgerson

Brady Weyerich nominated by Ms. Engle

Logan Stevens nominated by Ms. Engle

We greatly appreciate the excellent character and leadership these students exhibit within our school!

As we prepare for the upcoming week, remember that our students will not have school on Monday due to staff professional development. We will begin our week on Tuesday with our A-Day classes. Also this week, we invite all students and staff to participate in our WEB Spirit Week in honor of the RSHS Homecoming. The dress days will be as follows:

Tuesday: Cardinals Days

Wednesday: Crazy Hair and Sock Day

Thursday: PJ Day

Friday: Rockwood South/Summit Spirit Wear Day

Last but not least, our PSO provided our grant winners with their awards last week. Thanks to your generosity, our PSO is able to support our staff in dreaming big on behalf of our kids! Through these grants, we have been able to purchase picnic tables and umbrellas for outside learning and eating, and more. Although our Falcon Family Campaign came to an end last week, it is not too late to donate! Please click here to donate in support of our PSO and school.

We appreciate your partnership in supporting all of our students. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850. Have a wonderful weekend!

Welcome to Fall! We had a great week at Rockwood South. Once again, we appreciate all of our parents who volunteered to assist with our 6th-grade camp on Friday. Last week we had a very successful kick-off to our Renaissance Program. We already have over 70 nominations for our Discover, Connect, and Make a Difference Awards in just our first week! Due to the GREAT response of our students and staff, we will recognize students for these awards this month. In addition, we are excited to announce our students of the week! We appreciate the excellent character these students continually demonstrate. Congratulations to the following students:

Hailey Clubb - nominated by Mrs. Harper

In other news, we want to share with you that our Child Nutrition Services Department is currently experiencing some food and drink shortages in our cafeterias throughout the district as a result of food supply issues. School meal programs nationwide are experiencing many of the same supply chain issues that have impacted restaurants and grocery stores throughout the pandemic. Our entire Child Nutrition team appreciates your patience and understanding as we work through these unique challenges to effectively serve your child(ren) with nutritious meals at school! For more information, please access the RSD Website.

Last but not least, the CHADS Coalition will be visiting our 8th-grade PE Classes during the month of October. Please see this important message for 8th-grade parents and contact our School Counselors Office with any questions. Also, don't forget that our Falcon Family Campaign is currently underway! A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

Dear Falcon Family,

I hope you had a great week. We appreciate all of our parents who volunteered to assist with our 6th-grade camp on Friday. Our kids had a great day of team building! If you took pictures to share of our kids in action, please add them to this google folder.

I want to share with you some important information related to a Tik Tok trend that has shown up at many schools across the district and in our country. The trend is called "Devious Licks". The idea behind the trend is for students to destroy things or take things from a teacher's desk or from the school, record it, and put it on social media.

Unfortunately, we experienced some of these actions at our school throughout this week. I'm sure you understand that there are many things wrong with these types of actions. Theft and destruction of property are not the values of our Falcon Community and cause a disruption to our school environment. As such, if students are caught engaging in these activities in our school, they will receive consequences which may include an out-of-school suspension.

Please speak with your child(ren) about this trend and help them understand the severity of this type of behavior and the consequences which come with it. If you have any questions or you would like to speak more in-depth about it, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or the other administrators. We want to keep Rockwood South a great place for all and it takes all of us to make that happen. Your help with this is greatly appreciated!

On a much more positive note, Monday will be the kick-off to the RSMS Renaissance Program! We provided our students with information on our Renaissance Program in all ELA classes last week. We encourage you to take a look at this presentation to learn how we will celebrate the moments that matter within our school.

As we look ahead to this week, we will continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by providing our school community with interesting facts, information about the contributions of Hispanic people in the United States, and more, during our morning announcements. We enjoy celebrating and learning about the many cultures that shape our amazing community!

Last but not least, please remind your student that Monday will be an A Day!

We appreciate your partnership in supporting all of our students. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850. Have a wonderful weekend!

A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

Dear Falcon Family,

Although last week was brief with our kids, it was certainly packed with events! We greatly appreciate all of you who attended our first PSO meeting last Wednesday and our Curriculum Night last Thursday. I will share resources with you below from both events that you may find helpful in supporting your student. Last but not least, we began our 6th-grade camp experience on Friday with team 6 Black. It was truly amazing to see the level of teamwork and communication our kids exhibited during these activities! We appreciate all of our parents who volunteered to assist with the 6th-grade camp. If you took pictures to share of our kids in action, please add them to this google folder.

Resources from our PSO Meeting:

Technology Tips and Tricks-check out the linked video from our presenter, Ms. Larissa Bray, as she shares important technology tips for accessing Infinite Campus. This session will assist parents in locating their child's grades and more.

Looking for a way to support RSMS? Please consider donating to our Falcon Family Campaign! Your contribution will support our PSO in making purchases that benefit our students' middle school experience. If you would like to contribute to our Falcon Family Campaign, simply access this link for more information.

Resources from our Curriculum Night:

Curriculum Night Videos-If you were not able to attend our Curriculum Night, please check out the videos in the linked Curriculum Night Videos folder. If you do not see a video for a particular teacher, please reach out to that teacher for more information.

RSD Curriculum Overview-The RSD Curriculum Department has shared an overview of each curricular area linked in the RSD Curriculum Overview. You are welcome to use this as a resource.

English Language Arts Letter-A message regarding book selection and more.

Curriculum Night Question Form-to submit questions for response by our staff. The form will close by the end of the day on Tuesday, September 14. We will answer all of your questions by email or phone call by the end of the day on Friday, September 17.

As we look ahead to this week, tomorrow we will follow our B-Day Schedule. We will begin our morning with a moment of silence and special announcements in honor of the victims and heroes who passed during the tragic events on September 11, 2001.

Also this week, please take note that National Junior Honor Society application packets will be distributed to all students who qualify to apply for NJHS. The requirements for eligibility include the following:

⮚ 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher at the end of 6th or 7th grade

⮚ Currently enrolled in seventh or eighth grade

Finally, our after-school activities will begin this week on Tuesday, September 14. To participate, a permission form must be completed and signed by a parent and turned into the Front Office. You can access the linked Permission Form, here.

The Student Sign-up form is linked on each Counselor’s Canvas page. Sign-ups open on Saturday morning each week at 8:00 a.m. and close on Monday at 2:00 p.m. Students MUST sign-up by the deadline to stay for after-school activities. Since this is our first week of activities, we will guide our students through the sign-up process tomorrow.

Please see the current activity choices listed below in our After-School Activities section of the newsletter. Remember, we will hold activities each week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2:45-3:50 p.m. If you are picking up your child from school, please be present by 3:50 p.m.

A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

Dear Falcon Family,

We had a great first week at Rockwood South. Our students are settling into their A/B Day schedule and our staff is enjoying getting to know our students. We are looking forward to another excellent week, starting with a B-Day on Monday.

As we prepare for next week, please remember that we will have yearbook picture day on Monday, August 30. On this day, any student/staff member who did not have their picture taken during orientation will be released at scheduled times throughout the morning to have their picture taken.

Also this week, our students will be taking the STAR test in their ELA and Math classes. Please see this flyer for information about STAR.

Parents, we appreciate your help and patience with our arrival and drop-off process. We have many car riders and walkers, which leads to a great deal of traffic. Please be cautious as you are driving on our parking lot and driveway as we must work together to keep all of our students safe.

Last but not least, please save the date of Thursday, September 9, for our Virtual Curriculum Night. The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. During this event, you will meet with each of your child's first-semester teachers via Zoom. We will provide you with details of this event in our next newsletter.

We greatly appreciate your partnership and support. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850. I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

Dear Falcon Family,

It's time for our first day of school! We are very excited to have our students return for the 21-22 school year. Our teachers and staff have been working hard in preparation for what is sure to be our best year yet.

To make sure your student is fully prepared for the first day, please carefully read the bulleted information below. You will find information and links to our A/B Day Schedule, lunches, and more.

A/B Day Schedule--RSD Middle Schools utilize an A Day/B Day schedule. Within this schedule, students will have Language Arts every day (with the exception of students who participate in Stretch), and two Encore classes every day. Science, Social Studies, Math, and Physical Education/Health, will meet on alternating days. As you can see on the linked document, we will begin the year with an A Day on August 23.

Daily Bell Schedule and Lunch Schedule--On this link, you can see a breakdown of our daily schedule and our lunch schedule. You will see that homeroom is your student's first block class on A Day and on B Day. As such, students will report to their A Day or B Day first block class upon arrival, unless they are going to the cafeteria for breakfast. This document is also a helpful tool for students to use to break down their daily schedule.

Lunch--At RSMS, we have two lunch shifts for each grade level. Students will attend lunch shifts based on their scheduled core class during their grade level lunch block. Students may have a different lunch time each day based on their A/B class schedule. Again, please see this document to view the daily bell schedule and the teacher lunch schedule. Find your A day and B day teacher name under your grade level lunch times to see which lunch you will attend. Staff will be guiding students through lunch times and procedures Monday morning.

Arrival and Dismissal Video for Students--You can view our arrival and dismissal procedures to be ready for the first day. Students may arrive at school as early as 7:00 a.m. Any students arriving prior to 7:15 will go to the cafeteria. At 7:15, we will begin releasing buses and all students will report to their first block class (the first day is an A Day) or to the cafeteria for breakfast.

Arrival Procedures for Parents--Parents, this brief video will help you to understand the rules of the road for drop-off procedures on the RSMS parking lot.

Talon Talk Video--Have your student watch our Talon Talk Video as we kick off the school year! Our admin team will create a new video for our students each month.

Masks--Please remember that all students are required to wear masks indoors.

We look forward to seeing our students on Monday! Until then, I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850. This is going to be the best year yet!

With Falcon Pride,

Students who are designated as walkers will have an opportunity to use a locker BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL only. All students who completed the online locker form will receive their locker during homeroom on our first day of school. Please remember to bring a lock for your items.

As a reminder, all students will be permitted to carry their backpacks while at school.

INFORMATION FOR BUS RIDERS

The start of school is quickly approaching and we are pleased to inform you that your child’s bus stop information for the 2021-2022 school year is now available by logging on to e-Link. Parents must know their child's student number to log on, which can be found in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.

Please use the student number as both the user ID and password to sign into e-Link. Then click "Work with Students," then "View my Students," then click on the student's name to access the student's specific bus information.

Please keep in mind:

As a result of the continued driver shortage, which most school districts in our region and state are experiencing, Rockwood is implementing the following changes for the 2021-2022 school year:

Students who live within approximately one mile of most of our schools will no longer be eligible for transportation (those who are affected by this change were notified back in June via email by our department);

A significant number of routes will be combined to create more efficient routes that our staffing can reasonably support;

Having fewer routes and more students on our buses will mean that we will have less flexibility to accommodate changes. Unless it is a true emergency, we will no longer be allowing guest riders or accepting requests to drop off at a location other than your home address or alternate address (with the exception of a childcare facility);

Bus stop locations in many instances have changed from previous years as we have had to reduce routes as a result of the driver shortage;

Masks are required on all forms of public transportation across the country, including school buses;

Transportation registration has closed for the start of the school year. If your child is eligible for transportation this year and is not assigned a bus, transportation registration will reopen on August 27 and will be accessible on the Transportation Department web page. Once registration has reopened, please allow up to 2-3 business days after you register for the information to populate in e-Link

Our families participating in the voluntary transfer program will receive a postcard in the mail with bus stop information. Parents will find out their bus stop information from Voluntary Interdistrict Choice Corporation (VICC) Transportation and may call the VICC Transportation office at (314) 721-8657 for more information.

If you have questions about your child's bus route stop, you can contact the Rockwood Bus Call Center at (636) 733-8500.

Are you ready for 6th-grade camp? Rockwood South 2021-2022 6th graders will be attending camp this year at Camp Wyman, located in Eureka.

Dear Falcon Family,

We are excited to begin our pre-school events this week in preparation for our best year yet! Please see the following important reminders about these events and note that masks are required for all indoor events.

Monday, August 16:

WEB Day for 6th-grade students will be held at RSMS from 8-11:00 a.m.

Students should arrive at 7:50 a.m. and need to be picked up by 11:00 a.m. We will begin our day in the gymnasium and conclude our day on the field, weather permitting.

This will be a morning of fun activities! Please remember to wear your mask, wear comfy shoes, and dress comfortably.

Parents, because the goal of this event is for students to establish relationships with one another and their 8th-grade WEB Leaders, we will not permit parents to stay for this event.

Tuesday, August 17:

Student Schedules will be viewable in Infinite Campus on Tuesday, August 17, at 8:00 a.m. If you need assistance in accessing your student's schedule, we are happy to help you at our grade-level orientations. Concerns with your child's schedule should be noted on this Google Form. Please avoid calling the school or emailing your grade-level counselor; the school counseling team will be monitoring this Google Form. If you are unable to log in to Infinite Campus, please contact portal assistance at portalhelp@rsdmo.org or by calling (636) 733-1111 Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

6th-grade orientation will be held from 1-4 p.m. at RSMS. Please remember to wear a mask.

Wednesday, August 18:

7th-grade orientation will be held from 1-4 p.m. at RSMS. Please remember to wear a mask.

Thursday, August 19:

8th-grade orientation will be held from 3-6 p.m. at RSMS. Please remember to wear a mask.

The Beginning Band Meeting and Instrument Display will be held in the gym at RSMS 6-8 p.m. Families will be able to rent an instrument, purchase a band book and accessories, and receive information concerning band requirements and performance dates at the meeting.

It is important to note that for all orientations, students will have the opportunity to take their yearbook picture, turn in any needed medications to our School Nurse, view opportunities from our PSO, and walk their first-semester schedule. Please also note that orientation is not mandatory; we will have a make-up picture day this Fall if you are unable to attend the grade-level orientations.

Similar to last year, all required paperwork must be completed online. The linked Back To School information will assist you in accessing the information you need.

Last but not least, please access our School Supply List Document to be fully prepared for the first day of school on Monday, August 23.

I am incredibly thankful to be a part of our Falcon Family. I look forward to meeting our new families and to working with each of you to discover, connect, and make a difference. The power of our partnership is essential for the well-being of our children.

I hope you enjoy this final week of summer. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850. This is going to be the best year yet!

STUDENT SCHEDULE INFORMATION

Student Schedule Information

We are happy to share that student schedules will be ready for viewing on Tuesday, August 17, after 8:00 a.m. Here are a few reminders regarding schedules:

The Rockwood School District hires teachers and creates a master school schedule based on the courses that students sign up for in the spring.

Students will not necessarily have their electives in order of preference.

Requests were due by May 15, 2020.

If you are considering a schedule change, the following are acceptable reasons to request a change:

The schedule is incomplete or is missing a class.

The schedule has an incorrect level class: challenge, grade-level, or IEP.

The schedule has an incorrect encore class (Please Note: Students do not get the courses in order of preference, just sometime throughout the year.)

If one of these three reasons applies, please fill out this Google Form.

INFORMATION FOR WALKERS

Students who are designated as walkers will have an opportunity to use a locker BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL only, and by parent permission in completing this important form. Again, this form is only for students who are designated as walkers.

As a reminder, all students will be permitted to carry their backpacks while at school.

A MESSAGE FROM DR. BIRKENMEIER

Dear Falcon Family,

Welcome to Rockwood South Middle School and the 2021-2022 school year! I hope you had a fantastic summer filled with time to relax and rejuvenate. Although we have some uncertainty regarding masks and health protocols, with more information to come soon, one thing that remains certain is the strength of our Falcon Family. I couldn't help but share this again with you as we start our school year. I smile when I read the definition of "Family" above as it perfectly fits our community. I have personally seen our community support and care for one another in the best and most difficult times. I do not doubt that we will continue to extend grace to one another in our community, provide support, and work together to make certain our kids thrive. I am immensely proud of our Falcon Family!

As we head into our best year yet, I would like to share the following important information with you to support your back-to-school preparations.

Student SchedulesStudent Schedules will be viewable in Infinite Campus on Tuesday, August 17, at 8:00 a.m. If you need assistance in accessing your student's schedule, we are happy to help you at our grade-level orientations.

Orientations: We will host grade-level orientations on the following dates:

6th grade orientation--Tuesday, August 17 from 1-4 p.m.

7th grade orientation--Wednesday, August 18 from 1-4 p.m.

8th grade orientation--Thursday, August 19 from 3-6 p.m.

At this event, students will have the opportunity to take their yearbook picture, turn in any needed medications to our School Nurse, view opportunities from our PSO, and walk their first-semester schedule. It is important to note that you do not need to sign up for a slot to take a picture on any of these dates. In addition, please note that we will have a make-up picture day this Fall if you are unable to attend the grade-level orientations.

The linked Back To School information will assist you in preparing for orientation and the upcoming school year.

Beginning Band Meeting and Instrument Display: Thursday, August 19 from 6-8 p.m. Families will be able to rent an instrument, purchase a band book and accessories, and receive information concerning band requirements and performance dates at the meeting.

Three companies: Nottelmann Music (314-631-1486), Music In Arts (314-968-5459), and Palen Music (636-229-1904) will have representatives there to answer your questions, rent the instrument, and supply the necessary accessories and the book needed for the class. If you cannot make the display, you may call and set up a rental over the phone. I believe they all have online renting as well. These companies offer affordable rental prices and will make sure you get the correct mouthpiece and accessories for your instrument. They also visit our school once a week to pick up any repairs and deliver ordered accessories so you will never have to spend time driving to the music store. If you are unable to rent an instrument, please email me at albrechtangela@rsdmo.org. I will make sure your child has an instrument to play.

** Please note: You may rent or purchase an instrument by check or major credit card!

School SuppliesGet ready for the school year by accessing our School Supply List Document.

Lockers: As a reminder, students will not have lockers this school year. However, students who are designated as walkers will have an opportunity to use a locker BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL only, and by parent permission in completing this important form. Again, this form is only for students who are designated as walkers.

All students will be permitted to carry their backpack while at school.

WEB Day for 6th-grade: WEB Day will be held at RSMS on Monday, August 16, from 8-11:00 a.m.

I am incredibly thankful to be a part of our Falcon Family. I look forward to meeting our new families and to working with each of you to discover, connect, and make a difference. The power of our partnership is essential for the well-being of our children. And of course, we will get through whatever comes our way this year, because we're FAMILY.

I hope you enjoy the last few weeks of summer and please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at 636-891-6850. This is going to be the best year yet!
