Rockwood Celebrates National School Lunch Week

Rockwood Child Nutrition Services manager Lisa Chesselow poses with a student during lunchThis week, Oct. 11-15, Rockwood joins school districts across the country to celebrate National School Lunch Week. It's a time to recognize the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child's life and the impact it has inside and outside of the classroom.

At Fairway Elementary, Rockwood Child Nutrition Services (CNS) manager Lisa Chesselow supervises and trains her team in meal preparation and service, monitors equipment and communicates with her CNS colleagues, principals and staff to ensure students receive a balanced meal.

"I love that I get to see each student that comes through the cafeteria line, greet them, remind them of food options and look into each of their faces and make a connection," Chesselow shared. "Food provides the energy that students need in order to be physically and mentally prepared for learning. All that we do in our kitchen is ultimately linked to supporting our wonderful team of teachers and making sure the students are re-energized for the rest of their afternoon."

This year, Rockwood is serving more than 12,294 lunches and over 2,097 breakfast meals per day. Director Child Nutrition Services Carmen Fischer said the numbers continue to increase each week since both breakfast and lunches are free to all students.

"It's wonderful that students are enjoying the balanced lunches we are preparing for them," Fischer said. "We pride ourselves on offering fresh fruits and vegetables to our students."

Rockwood Child Nutrition Services is currently hiring. If you know someone who is interested in making a difference, please visit the Child Nutrition Services page on our district website.
