The month of February is Black History Month. The Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of blacks in U.S. history. As we go through the month of February we plan to highlight some of these achievements from the prominent figures that helped build our country.
Did you know that George Washington Carver, although born into slavery
,went on to become one of the most prominent scientists and inventors of his time, as well as a teacher at the Tuskegee Institute? Carver devised over 100 products using one major crop — the peanut — including dyes, plastics and gasoline.
Students, when others are hurting, as a community, it provides an opportunity for us to lift them up. A little over a week ago, two middle school aged girls and their mothers (from Louisville, Kentucky) were traveling to Kansas City on their way to a volleyball tournament. While passing through St. Louis, another car hit them, killing all four passengers.
To show our support, as a school we have decided to reach out to another community to show our support during their time of grief.
To show our support as a school we will be engaging in two activities this week. On Wednesday - You will have the opportunity to sign two volleyballs (one for each of the girls) during your lunch time. These volleyballs will be mailed to the volleyball club that they played for along with a letter from the administrative team and cards from students who choose to make one. Friday - We will have a hat day. For a minimum donation of $1.00, you may wear a hat or hood with the money raised from this day donated directly to one of the funds that have been set up to support the two families and their community.
If you've lost it, we've found it. This week the lost and found will be on display in the commons. Please stop by and take a look for any items you may have misplaced. At the end of the week, any unclaimed items will be donated to a worthy cause.
Best Buddies will have a kick ball game in the gym on March 4th after school. The event is open to all students and teachers as well.
Student birthdays today is:
If you would please come to the office for a birthday surprise at this time!
February's Character Word: "Honesty"
Honesty is defined as a moral character that is a positive and virtuous attribute. An honest person has integrity, truthfulness, is loyal and fair, and strives to do the right thing. As we go through our day let's think of how we can use honesty to make our school and relationships better for everyone.
Khaled Hosseini once said, "When you tell a lie
, you steal someone's right to the truth."
At this time would everyone please stand for the pledge of allegiance.
Everyone have a "Very Welcomed" Wednesday!
